Life in Oz!
I made it to Darwin, 1,500 Kilometers from Alice Springs, and it seems like an awesome city. I am really excited to explore it when I get back from my Kakadu safari Sunday arvo. There wasn't much to see between Alice Springs to Darwin but the trip was good...what I saw of it anyway. Whenever we were on the road I spend my time in the back with my foot up so I got to know the ceiling quite well when I wasn't sleeping. There are 2 buses traveling together so that are just over 30 of us total. I got a nice surprise the first time we got off the bus to see one of the sites. One of my mates from Uni is on the trip as well! I was happy because he was one of the people I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to and now I get to spend and extra 3 days with him. There are 4 of us from the Sunshine coast because he is with a few friends whom I don't really know. We stayed at an Outback cattle station called Banka Banka Tuesday night after crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, exploring Devil's Marbles (huge rocks/boulders scattered about) and stoping for petrol and stretch breaks. We were on the road again by about 6:45 on Wednesday morning. We stopped in the small town of Elliott (pop 600) where I held a snake and Blue-tongued Lizzard. Lunch was at the famous Dahly Waters Pub, far away from anything. It was a really neat place with lots of decoration, most of which was left by travelers. Mainly money bills and undergarments. We took a quick break at some hot springs that were luke warm and smelled funny. We then headed to Katherine to get any supplies we may have needed and camp was 10 minutes out of town. It was a nice camp angain and it is definately warmer up here, I finally don't need a jumper! Its just like summer again. We even got to meet the tree frogs that live in the toilets, it was quite a site. We got to sleep in until 6am today (Thursday). Our first stop was Katherine Gorge. Where we got to canoe in the gorge from 8-11:30. There are heaps of gorges in the system but we only canoed in the first gorge because we didn't want to carry the canoe over the rapids. We sat on the rocks instead and enjoyed the view. My partner in crime with the canoe was a German guy named Oliver who had absolutely no experience in a canoe before and it showed. We didn't have far to drive to Edith Falls. The water was really cold and we didn't have much time so I decided not to be bothered with swimming all the way over to the falls, I just took a few pictures instead. I am now in Darwin and the hostel seems pretty nice. I'm in a room with Jocelyn and Jamie again, the 2 Canadian girls that are doing the Cloud 9 trip as well (Alice to Uluru, Alice to Darwin and Darwin to Kakadu). If I got a dollar for every time someone asked me if I was Canadian since I started traveling in Perth I would have paid for my plane ticket home already. It scares me to be with these 2 because we all sound the same except their occassional 'hey?' (aye). Friday, Saturday and Sunday I will be exploring the wonders of the Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks. I am pretty excited. Hopefully I won't hurt my ankle again. It isn't bad now. It is finally black and blue but most of the swelling is gone. I asked one of the girls on the trip who is a nurse about it and she said I can walk so not to worry...exactly what I thought. Look for another update in a few days.
