The last day we spent in Varansi was very nice. On the evening that i wrote the last blog we went to The German Bakery and had an amazing meal, so the next day we centred our day around having a long lunch there (consisting of an incredible chocolate brownie sunday with hot fudge sauce!) before yoga. I really enjoyed our yoga class, we spent the first half of it doing breathing exercises and then went on to do various positions. It really did relax me and it was nice to stretch out all my muscles after carrying around my backpack for so long!
After checking out of our hotel we went to the train station for the worst train journey ever!! It is quite amusing looking back on it now, but at the time i was so angry. First of all we couldn't find our carrage, after walking up and down the world's longest train we finally discovered that our carrage wasn't actually there and that it was joining the end of the train. When our carrage finally arrived there was the usually scramble to get on but we got to our seats to find that they had been double booked. After about 45 minutes the tricket inspector (i think the only one on the train) came over and said that we could have an 'upgrade' to another carrage. At first we offered there upgrades to the other people because, to be honest, we just couldn't be bothered to pick up our increasingly heavy bags and drag them to the other end of the train but they point blank refused to move so at the next stop of we trotted to the other carrage. So there we were running along this platform towards the back of the train and the train starts to move without us so we jumped on to the nearest carrage (surprisingly, not an easy task with a backpack and two bags, and shockingly everyone just stands in the way) and carried on walking down the train. Walking down a train is not an easy thing to do in England but it makes it significanlty harder when they are fit to burst and people are sitting in the gangway. After about 3 carrages we hit a dead end (the door was locked) so we sat in the connection part between 2 carriges for another 30 minutes before the next stop where we finally found our carrage (3 1/2 hours later). Nightmare!
Anyway, we arrived in Kolkata (In true indian style, 2 hours late) and went to find our hotel. This turned out to be harder than it ever should be because our taxi driver was intent on not taking us to the one we wanted but one that knew in an area that was described to us as 'dicey'. The hotel we settled in isn't too bad. We have spent the last 2 days catching up on sleep and sorting out bits and bobs.
We are flying to Thailand tomorrow which i am SO excited about. I have really enjoyed india, and i'm definately coming back at some point, but right now i just want to relax.
Hope you are still all okay. xxxxxxxxx
