Our Travels
We set off early for our white water rafting adventure, checking in at the Queenstown office at 8am. We had been gearing ourselves up for an exhilerating trip down the Shotover River so it was a bit of a disappointment to discover that, for various unexplained reasons, this had been re-scheduled to the Kawarau River, an altogether more sedate and less challenging experience. What was challenging though was the amount of wetsuit layers we had to put on!! By the time we had struggled into three layers, plus a spray jacket, plus a life jacket we looked like a gang of michelin men on a staff outing! Once on the river we were grateful for the layers and couldn't believe it when the snowflakes started to fall. Didn't someone say it was spring?! We had fun negotiating the rapids, such as they were, and the added bonus of travelling under the A J Hackett bridge we had seen only a couple of days ago from above, just as some poor soul took the plunge. Luckily they managed to miss us!! After the rafting was over we were glad to warm up in the sauna before heading back to our base at Azur Lodge.
In the afternoon we took a trip in the cable car up the Skyline tower. The higher we got the harder the snow fell and it was falling thick and fast by the time we got off at the top. In spite of the snow we were determined to have a go on the Luge and took the chairlift to the top. The snow was driving in our faces as we hurtled down the track and our hands were ice blocks by the time we reached the bottom but it is such fun and not to be missed if you ever get the chance.
Down at the bottom of the cable car again the snow was reduced to sleety, cold, miserable rain. We had a walk around town and wondered if we might run into any of the England team who are based in Queenstown. Just about every person we meet has come across them somewhere or other, but we think they must be avoiding us as it seems that everywhere we go they have apparently just left!!
