Our Travels
Today was dry and mostly sunny which was lovely. However, once outside, we sooned realised that the temperature was even colder than yesterday! We did some very brisk walking in an attempt to keep warm but this was made difficult by the fact that all the slush had frozen which made the ground very slippery underfoot.
Back across the Tiber we soon reached the Piazza del Populo. Crowds of people were milling around enjoying the sunshine. We discovered that a re-creation of a traditional Roman Carnival was taking place and jesters, stilt walkers, fire eaters and various other forms of street entertainment was going on all around.
On leaving the square we soon came across the Spanish Steps with the imposing Villa Medici above. We paused for photos, and to watch more street dancers, before continuing on past the Fontana del Tritone. Across the road and up the hill we came across the Via delle Quattro Fontane, amazing fountains on all four corners of a very small crossroads. It seems that in Rome you come across such wonders everywhere you look.
On we marched at a good pace taking in many more sights along the way. Our fellow tourists were out in full force and it was quite busy everywhere. The biggest problem was not the crowds, it was the constant dripping of melting snow from the buildings above. Cold, wet drops on your head all the time are just not pleasant!
We eventually found our way to The Trevi Fountain which was our main aim for the day. Hundreds of other people had made it there too! It is very impressive though and no wonder everyone loves it. We threw the obligatory coin and maybe when we return it will be in warmer weather!
We turned a corner and, much to our surprise, found the Pantheon again. It seems that everything appears when you are not looking for it. We dodged down a side street and into a pizzeria which, unlike many places we had seen, was very busy with hardly a spare seat. Must be good! It was indeed and we each enjoyed a really great pizza for lunch. Afterwards we popped into the Pantheon (open this time!) before heading in the direction of the hotel.
On the way we came across the Largo di Torre Argentina which is a group of four temples uncovered during building works in 1929. Again, fascinating to come across such wonders just as you turn a corner. We paused a while and watched the many cats who seem to have made there home there, at least a dozen that we counted.
Crossing the Ponte Umberto I once again we paused to take a phot of St Peter's Basilica before heading back to the hotel, just in time to watch Wales v Scotland on the big screen. A leisurely evening in the hotel before yet another early night. All that walking is exhausting!!
