Our Travels
We slept well in our cabin overlooking beautiful Emerald Lake. We wandered up to the main lodge for breakfast and an opportunity to use the internet then caught the shuttle down to the car park. We set off down the road and first stop was in the small village of Field for a look round. It took us a good 5 minutes to tour the whole town which is small but has a school, church, shops and all other mod cons. Anything lacking is made up for by the fantastic mountain back drop.
On down the road we took a left turn and headed towards the Takakkaw Falls which are some of the highest in the Rockies. The road had been closed when we came this way with Max, but luckily it was open now. We travelled about 13 km along narrow mountain roads and some fairly unfriendly and quite scary hairpin bends until we arrived at the parking place near the Falls. We set off and found that it was quite chilly so were glad of a brisk pace. We stopped to admire a couple of ground squirrels by a bench. We only saw one to start with but the other popped out of a hole, fascinating! We crossed a bridge across the fast flowing river and headed towards the base of the Falls. It was very impressive, tall, with spray rising up everywhere. So many beautiful sights!
Back at the car we drove back to Lake Louise and parked at the Chateau where we had stayed a few days ago. We had a bit of a walk round the lake which, unlike last time, was absolutely mobbed because of the public holiday. We enjoyed an ice cream before getting back on the road. We dropped in to look at the old Lake Louise station and admire a couple of old carriages. Everywhere we went we saw signs warning about grizzlies in the area which was a bit alarming. We never saw any though, not a single one!
Back at Emerald Lake Lodge we went into the hot tub which was 40 degrees which is indeed very hot and we were beginning to look like boiled lobsters! We dressed and went up to the Mount Burgess Dining Room in the main lodge to have some dinner. Very nice food and plenty of it. How do they manage to get supplies all the way up here?
Back in our cabin we lit the fire again and once more fell asleep watching the dancing flames.
