Our tour along the Great Ocean Road was behind us and now we had the delights of Melbourne to explore...
Merit and Charlotte were staying at the same hostel (Urban Central) as me so we jumped in a taxi and got settled in at the hostel. It seemed like a nice hostel, clean, max of 4 people in a dorm and free breakfast!
One of the first things we did in Melbourne was to prebook tickets for the new Harry Potter film. We watched that on the day it came out, looking forward to seeing the finale when I'm back in the UK!
There's a bus in Melbourne you can catch for free that goes around the city which I'd recommend as a good way to get ideas on what to do in Melbourne. There's also a free tram that circles the CBD which is very handy!
St Kilda was a really nice place to for a day trip. The beach is the main reason to go there and we were lucky with the weather. There's also really nice bars and cafes along the high street which are definitely worth checking out.
Went to the Melbourne museum one day which was really good. It was a massive place and I liked the section on insects/spiders/snakes etc. They had loads of info on the dangerous animals in Oz which was interesting. There was a rainforest in the museum which was random and the hide and skeleton of the famous racehorse whose name I've forgotten already!
The centre for moving images was really interesting as well. They had an exhibit of the Disney films over the last however many years. Sounds a bit lame but it showed how the films were created 50-60 years ago and how it's all changed now. They even had a film that I don't think has been released yet - untangled?
Charlotte managed to get me to try out Pilates one evening! Didn't seem too bad but then I probably wasn't doing it right. Don't say I don't try new things. Went to the gym after and realised how little exercise I've done over the last 3 months - might try and get out running a bit more...
Saw the botanical gardens and Albert park (which is where the Oz Grand Prix is held). Saw the pit straight and the starting grid, it's just a normal road when not being used for F1. Also went for lunch on Brunswick Street on my last day in Melbourne. Again, really good cafes and bars up that end of town, worth visiting if in Melbourne!
Think that's about it! Booked a ticket on the greyhound to Cairns where you can hop on and off as you like so my next stop will be Sydney! Had to say goodbye to Merit in Melbourne, thanks for a great time on the tour and in Melbourne. Hope to see you in Germany or London some time!
