Haven't the last couple of days been eventful! I think we are being punished for having too much fun at Carnaval. That must be the only reason for everything that has happened the last couple of days.
For those of you that have seen Justine's Instagram posts - you will know what I mean (but wait - there is more she isn't telling you...)
For those of you that haven't... Please read on!
We left Rio on Tuesday to make our merry way to São Paulo. I had already started experiencing a fever, sore muscles and had a sore throat. We were monitoring the symptoms, but hoping nothing would eventuate. As I was feeling s***. I told Justine "let's order an uber to get to the bus, I can't be effed with the public transport."
So - we did. Justine went downstairs first and met our driver. I wandered down a couple of minutes later feeling like death... To explain: To exit our apartment, you go through a door, then through a gate. But to get through the gate, you have to press a buzzer which is located INSIDE the door. What happened was, I opened the door, carried my stuff outside, buzzed the gate, Justine opened the gate, I passed her my bag, turned around and shut the door (which locks) picked up my smaller bag only to hear the gate click shut too. Justine had decided not to wait, and left the gate. I was now stranded between the door and the gate. No way in. No way out. I blame her, she blames me. Either way. I was not in a happy predicament for someone feeling like death on a 36 degree day in Rio. Justine being the brilliant friend she is, stood there, on the outside, laughed and took photos. I now know how the meerkats feel at the zoo. I wasn't seeing the funny side quite so much as Justine was - but I soon did when she was laughing so hard she trod in dog poo. Karma is a b****!
Eventually (after 10-15 minutes) an old lady came downstairs and I was let out of my cage! Onward to São Paulo!
We got our tickets at the bus stop and jumped on the bus to São Paulo. One thing I have heard about the buses in South America - the aircon is always cranking. I was excited for this prospect as it was a hot and humid day. We got on our bus and started heading for São Paulo. And the aircon was taking a while to really get going. We thought it would maybe take a few minutes to get cranking, but no dice. We knew when the locals were starting to complain, something probably wasn't right... 90 minutes into our journey in the sauna that was our bus, the driver told us the aircon wasn't working. And we were going to sit and wait another 90 minutes in the sauna until another bus arrived... On the plus side, I really think it helped my sore muscles...
Our six hour journey turned into eight, and we arrived at our destination.
The following morning, I felt seriously crap. I could no longer swallow water and we managed to find an English speaking doctor. I feared the worst. Dengue, Zika, you name it. Justine being the ever sympathetic person she is, laughed at me. But was supportive enough to come to the doctors and giggle and take photos. It's all fun and games until someone gets diagnosed with Zika... But, it's just tonsillitis. Antibiotics for a week, and I'll be right as rain! Phew.
After this, we had an adventure around São Paulo. We saw some major attractions, ate some delish food. But nothing as entertaining as Justine treading in dog s***... I just wanted to bring that up again... I feel she hasn't had as many hilarious moments in this blog post!
Tonight, we venture to Florianopolis.
