We met Kim at the airport with posters embarrassing her on arrival. Was the perfect start to her five weeks with us. We didn't want to push her too hard on the first day, so just ventured out for a quiet dinner and drink in Palermo where we updated her on adventures and Justine's love life.
Day two was a different story. We went on a walking tour through the city. In four hours we had learnt about the corrupt politics, how to avoid being scammed, much of the history and saw many of the sites. Highlight would have to be the story (names and dates have been forgotten) about two young lovers who were separated because his wealthy mother didn't approve that she was "new money". To combat their romance, she sent her son to Europe for business for most of his life. This same mother was an exceptionally wealthy and catholic woman. She commissioned a church to be built across from her palace. She wanted an amazing view of the said church and to be buried there. Well... Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned... The previous lover of her son by this point still held a grudge. She sold all her fathers land and with the money, purchased the land in front of the church and gave the builders one instruction... "Just make it taller than the church."
It was purely payback and to block the view of the church. Absolutely hilarious. I will post a photo.
Another highlight of the walking tour was the Recoleta Cemetery. I don't normally take photos in graveyards... But this was incredible. They have crypts that the family maintains. You can look down in some of these crypts and just see coffin stacked on coffin. I believe the one that holds the most is around 108 (don't hold me to that fact). We continued to wander the streets of Buenos Aires before heading out for an amazing steak. We were told to go to Don Julio where you also get to sign your bottle of wine and put it on the shelf. Trying to try some local flavours, we also had blood sausage and gizzards. Both of which were delish (if you didn't think about it).
After the wine, we were ready for a night out. Kim jumped on some review sites and found a club nearby. So we ventured there. It was gay night with performances on the stage and a roving stripper pole. It was hilariously fun and Kim is now in charge of choosing every venue we go to.
The next day we felt a bit sorry for ourselves (obviously) so didn't venture too far from the safety of Palermo until our tango lesson and show that evening... It. Was. Hysterical. The instructor was an eccentric personality who had us all learning the steps, then putting us together with our partners. We were paired up at random then swapped around. My personal highlight was probably when I got partnered with a 5 foot Korean man who thought he was the tango extraordinaire. Lots of laughs were ensued. We then viewed a show spectacular with singing and dancing and musical performances.
Our final day in the city was spent catching a glimpse of the view sites we had not yet made it too, and a long stint at a Saturday market that had all the things you could want or need or never want to see again. Obviously. Money was spent...
Following from this, we had a 14 hour bus ride to Mendoza which is where we are now. Wine country. Could be a dangerous few days!
