In Lima we went to Convento de San Francisco - a beautiful old church with catacombs underneath the church. We could only go through with a guide and unfortunately weren't allowed to take any photos. The catacombs were down a tunnel underground where 70,000 people were buried. Lots of the dusty bones could be seen including lots of skulls and the strongest femur bones were displayed first. Included in the building was an ancient library with books from the 16th and 17th century - looking like something from Harry Potter. We also saw a stunning version of the last supper with South American food and the painter had painted himself instead of signing the painting.
Watching changing of the guard was entertaining with a brass band and soldiers swinging their legs past 90 deg!
We did a 2 hour walking tour of the city taking in the sights - the Pisco tastings at the end set the tone for the rest of the day :)
