All Balinese, men and women, are named by their birth order. Wayan is firstborn; Made is second, followed by Nyoman and Ketut. A fifth child begins the pattern with Wayan again. 'Ni' is added to a woman's name. We hired Made as our driver for our Day Tour.
South of Kuta, Jimbaran used to be a tiny fishing village but now it has seafood restaurants lining the beaches with some 5 star resorts looming in the background. I enjoyed the energy as fishermen brought their catch of the day into the market. At one point, some fishermen dragged up a huge fish they had cut up into pieces. I was stunned at the bloody mess of organs and flesh.
The guide book warned tourists to step aside and watch out for slippery floors and flying fish in this dark, working seafood market. They weren't kidding! Blocks of ice were being hauled in, squashing us up against the sides in tight pathways. I'm sure we were slimed by fish parts as they were cutting them up. Local shoppers were buying dinner from a variety of fresh fish options. Many of the fish were what we had seen snorkelling. I wonder what scorpion fish, parrot fish or angel fish taste like?
