...Next day we all decided to walk to a shipwreck we\'d see back along the coast (Well, M & L walked, I only have little legs so sat on top of M\'s day pack) This was one of those walks where the object is always \'just around the next headland\'....5 headlands and 5kms later we arrived footsore at the wreck on the \'Dimitrios\'. This was a russian skippered cargo ship taking oranges (Portokalia) from Githio to Russia, it seems the skipper had an enviable vodka habit, and drank the crews wages, the crew tired of this and jumped ship, two days later the Dimitrios dragged its anchor in a storm and rolled up on the rocks at the other side of the bay. Beach here is super and dominated by this huge wreck. Of course we all had to face the 5km walk back! This took us on a different riut through the sad remains of what was once a fabulous \"james bond\' style hotel with circular 60\'s architecture, now pretty deralit and occupied by an old boy in a \'the shining\' kind of role, a caretaker nearing total madness as each day passed. Grounds were full of fierce looking guard dogs whos sole aim in life was to finish off anyone who mis-calculated the length of their chains!! Met up with our Aussie friends Roy & Dorothy that evening, Petros had spotted them with his radar! In Githio we noticed every job was done by the same guy!. Preceded by the \'pop-pop-pop\' of his 1950\'s moped he\'d rock up at the hotel as receptionist (no guests but us though), at the shipping office, the kafenion, the fish shop...he even putt-putted out the the dock & tied up the ferry...always in the same shirt too. We\'ve decided after much mind-changing that we will go over to Crete tomorrow (Thursday 6th) and have booked a seat on the ferry for 10:30. There is much confusion as to when ferries leave Crete and wether they go to Kalamata or back to Githio. The ferry office guys know the least.
