A Grand Tour of Greece With a Rubber Rat
Yassoo, Hi all, we've arrived on Crete after a 7 hour sail, not too bumpy, I can be a real ships's rat here..Ha ha.
Whilst arriving in Kissimos-Kastelli we noticed that there were 5 cabs at the dock, 70 people on the boat & no bus. ....Time to befriend the english couple we'd met earlier on deck who had a motorhome!, plied them with interesting detals of Cretan literature so they felt quite obliged to give us a lift into town which is 3kms from the port!
After an hour bus trip from kastelli to Chanis we roleed dog-tired into town & hiked across to the old venetian harbour. They bwere filming some Greek soap there (Sort of 'home and away' with squid) and harbour restaurants were packed. Finding a room was tougher than we thought with most running at 50plus euros a niht for mediochre stuff, so we settled on a cheapie with a view of the water heater and below the church bells. We ate the most fantastic Kleftico in a back street taverna (Never fall for the over-priced waterside tourist traps) and rolled in. Next day werer quite disenchanted with Chania which has been taken over by Brits so with little persuasion we decided to head South to our favourite place, Paleochora. We'd said we wouldn't go to anywhere we'd been before, but we're pretty knackered and need a rest. The bus ride was two hours thrugh the White Mountains, full of Cretan smells - Orange blossom and Jasmin. There was also a big hill fire being sorted out by WW2 seaplanes dumping water on it.
Arrived in Paleochora and met up with our friends Flora and Haris who own a beautiful group of apartment right on the waters edge. There is a big storm raging at sea with enormous waves & high winds, but its 20 degrees!. the sky is full of red Sahara sand coming in on the Scirrocco and it has turned the sun blue!, you can look straight at it without shielding your eyes, spooky! Forcast for tomorrow is hot again...What a fantastic choice this turned out to be...
Ok, speak later, stuff to do for us adventuring rodents,
el Rodente
(Still not able to put pictures on yet, will get camera card dumped to disc soon)
