Hey! Another blog already? Yes we're trying to do it whilst we remember!
We arrived on the South Island on Sunday afternoon. Our first destination was Kaikoura. After a couple of hours of driving we spotted some seals playing in the ocean. We pulled over and was surprised to find the beach covered in seals! It was very cool! We quietly and slowly walked down to the beach, there was alot of babies playing in the ocean and most of the adults were snoozing. There was hundreds of them covering the rocks. beach and the shallow waters. We stood there and watched them & it was lovely to see.
Yesterday we went on a whale wathing boat trip, the boat didnt have to travel far out to spot the marine life. On our trip we was going to be seeing male sperm whales as these live in the area all year round. They spend 40 - 60 mins under the water and 5-10mins on the surface. We was told that they usually see 1 or 2 sightings a trip but we was lucky and got to see two whales twice. As we arrived at our first sighting, dusky dolphins wre swimming next to and in front of the boat. After a few minutes we saw the spray from the whales blow hole. He chilled out on the surface for a few minutes and then he dived down and we got to see his big tail.
We then headed to the next spot & once again we didnt have to wait long as when we arrived the whale had surfaced. When he dived after 5 mins or so we thought he had gone down deep so everyone went back to thier seats and we started to head back to the first sighting area but Jay spotted the whale jump out of the ocean and do a big belly flop. The skipped turned the boat around and got us closer to the whale. By this time the whale was slapping his tail agains the ocean. He done this for a few mins and we was told that they do this to clean off the barnicals. This was really cool to see and we managed to get some iconic photos of the tail out of the water. He then chilled for a few mins and then dived down again into the ocean. We went back to the first sighting as the whale was due to come back up to the surface for oxygen and we only had to wait a few minutes for him to make his apprearance.
The whole day was excellent, we got to see seals out in the ocean, dolphins and ofcourse the giants...Sperm Whales.
We'll update you again soon!
