Gday all
Finally i have gotten around to writing an email about what im up to in
Norway. I flew from Toronto to London and then on to Oslo on the 13th of
march. Im living and working on a farm in Stokke, which is about 10 mins
from Tonsberg, a city two hours south of Oslo.
The farm is run by a couple, Anders is 27 and Leea 37, she is from
canada. The farm is pigs and mixed cropping but mainly cereals. There are
about 800 pigs in a large barn. At the moment i work about half in the
pig barn cleaning, shifting, weighing and feeding the pigs.
The cropping side of the farm is only just staring to gear up. we have
been spreading fertiliser on the pasture which is growing grass seed and
are about to start cultivating for the cereals. The season is about a
month early and temps have been in the teens this week. and the days re
getting longer at 7 mins a day, midnight sun is coming. There are only a
few traces of snow left.
We have also hauled pine logs for timber from the forest on the property
and cut a large amount of firewood for next winter. The farm will start
to green up in the next week or two. The place was snow covered only 3
weeks ago, the seasons here change so quickly.
I havent had much time to look around the place yet. I have been to
Tonsberg, which is a nice place, its on the water and there are bars and
restaurants along the waterfront. There is a tower that overlooks the
town and its over 1000 years old, they have a big music festival there in
may so i reckon i will give it a crack.
I have also met a youger couple who hae made it their mission to show me
around the place and show me a good time in Norway. This is great cause i
dont think Leea and anders are going to do much of that, they are pretty
boring. They were talking about going to sweden on a shopping trip soon,
but not sure if hat will happen. They can get a ferry to sweden in about
1 and a half hours and cause its so expensive in Norway its worth the
trip to sweden if your gonna stock up on alcohol, clothers, some food
items etc. A beer in a pub here is about 10 dollars and if you buys a
carton it works out to be about 5. This is why nobody goes to the pub
until about 11 and nightclubs about 1.
cant tell you much more at this stage...
but you can tell me heaps so get around an email reply, love to hear from
you all.
sorry for the lack of humour in this one
