Ladies, Men and fellow legends
Well its been ages sinse my last journal but let me tell you a little about all the places that i have been to in Norway. The first decent trip that Steinar took me on was to Geiranger. By this stage Thomas, another exchange worker from the czech rep was also there so the 3 of us piled in the car shortly after milking and went for a drive. Ten minutes down the road Steinar had thomas in the back seat nearly spewing up and forced a pit stop. Thomas looks a little like mr bean so while he was nearly sick his nickname was green bean. The paparazzi were out of the car in a flash eager to snap a memorable moment but he was able to contain himself.
Anyway unreal scenery on the way down to Geiranger, up over the roof of norway as they call it with all the old farm houses with grass on the roofs. Its very like going back in time or watching the lord of the rings. Snow capped peaks and waterfalls all around us on the winding roads.
Over the hill and the first glimpse of Geirangerfjord. Breathtaking. Such a beautiful place. We had a few photos at the lookout then went to the town. This place is very small, bout 600 people in winter but in summer 600,000 visit it either by car or by cruiseboat. So this place is real tourist magnet. There was 3 cruise liners there while we were there. We had some pizza then went for a cruise down the fjord. The veiw from the ferry was unreal, waterfalls on either side and small farms on cliff tops. Some of the farms were no bigger than a tennis court. Most were uninhabited now but were in full operation as little as 20 years ago. Most were totally cut off for 7 months in the winter. Access to some of them was on ladders up and across the cliffs. Animals like cows were carried in on backs while still calves and spent their whole life there. Even the kids had to be tied to a rope when they were sleeping so the didnt sleep walk off the cliffs.
We checked out a few of the shops and then took the other road out of town. Up on the hill there is an awesome view down the fjord, pictured here. One of the best views ive seen. We then drove the long way home through the Trollstigen Road. Its a series of sharp winding turns down a cliffside into the valley. This is real troll country and there are road signs there telling you to watch out for them. Also a very nice place and with the old stone bridges and list rolling through it was very mysterious, eirie and had a medievil feel to it all.
So that was a pretty awesome day trip, got home about 9.30 and had to get the cows to milk them, in bed about 1am. Worth it tho. If you are ever in Norway you have to go here.
