We left Monkey Mia early before the sun had made everything to hot, however it was already 30 degrees! First stop was Eagle Bluff, a cliff overlooking a shallow part of Shark Bay where using the binoculars we were able to see sharks swimming around. It is still very windy so keeping hats on requires good straps. Next stop was shell bay whose beach is entirely cockle shells from a particular cockle that can withstand the high salinity of the bay. The final stop was Hamlin beach which is home to what might be best described as primordial soup.
Stromatolites or stromatoliths are layered bio-chemical accretionary structures formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms, especially cyanobacteria.
By this time the temperature had risen to 41 degrees so we were glad to get back in the air conditioned car. After a further 450 kilometres we reached Geraldton for the night.
