Last day in Chile, we really have enjoyed this country and would highly recommend it to others. Today we fly out tonight at 11pm to California via Texas. We spent the day exploring the city using a hop on hop off bus whose bus stops were well hidden at times. Visited authentic market area and the main square with Cathedral and museum. Santiago is growing rapidly which is not surprising given the climate. The business district boasts a new tallest building every couple of years. The history is dominated by Spain and a continual clash between democratic government and the military. It does feel as if the military will not take over again but who knows.
As you may have read in the papers or seen on tv a volcano erupted in Chile this morning and the news is full of it. It is South of Santiago nearer the lakes area we visited last week and at present has not caused any injuries or disruption. Like all the natural events the pundits are debating should more people be evacuated should it be earlier or later, will it increase? The UK equivalent are floods and the stories surprisingly similar.
