Up at 4am this morning to be picked up and driven for an hour and a half in a bus up to Tatia geyser in the dark to capture the sun rise and see the geysers at their best. The highest point was 14,025 feet. At this height walking around is hard work due to the lack of oxygen. It was -5 degrees C so we had on our thermal underwear which we have been dragging around for the last month in temperatures which reached 47 degrees C!
After the geysers we went to a thermal pool and I went swimming again making sure to walk and swim at snails pace. The temperature started to rise in the sun despite the height. We visited a wetlands areas home to flamingos, coots, geese and vicuñas which all live on this "altiplano". Vicuñas are a relative of llamas being their wild cousin of these domestic animals.
All of this trip had the background of spectacular snow capped mountains rising to 17,000 feet. The snow level started at about 15,000 feet.
Finally a stop for some local food before descending to the relative lowlands of 7,000 feet where we are staying.

Ian Murray Hi Peter...glad to see you are adding to your list of wildlife spots . We managed Leopard and Blue Whale ..oh and Leeches ...in Sri Lanka . The Leeches seemed remarkably discriminating as they seemed to have a decided taste for my blood . Tell Sue she looks very fetching in the puffer jacket. Ian
