Rainbow Beach/ Fraser Island
We arrived in Rainbow Beach at around 1pm after a 6hr bus ride; all of us were very tired as we had got up early to catch the bus. As soon as we arrived we were asked to sit in the bar and wait for our meeting to start for Fraser Island. The meeting was basically to tell us about the dangers of camping on the island and how you should look after the vehicles etc. After a couple of hours we were free to have a look around Rainbow beach, and to be honest there isn't much there. A few little shops but nothing exciting. That evening we relaxed, had a few pints of cider and hit the sack because we knew the next couple of days were going to tiring.
We rose early, around 6.30am to get prepared for the camping trip ahead. We packed up our 4x4s with food, water, tents and general equipment and headed across the short sea channel to Fraser Island. Bradley drove first and probably got the best driving of the whole trip with really treacherous terrain to navigate around, as you could expect he was loving the hills and bumps in the road and made sure the people in the back could feel it. We first place we went to was called Lake Mckenzie, it was a fresh water lake with crystal clear waters and a white sandy beach, it was a pretty special place. After a few hours of chilling around the lake we made a simple lunch of sandwiches and then we all jumped back into our 4x4s and headed back along the bumpy roads, this time driven by Ross Smith to our campsite for the next few days ahead. We all put up our tents and soon started cooking dinner which once again consisted of steak, potato salad, and normal salad. (Hint to Wendy Matthews, get Brads to cook when we get home he's actually pretty good) After an amazing dinner we got to know everyone within our camp, around 60 other people. We were a large group!
The next day we rose early and cooked up breaky which consisted of Spanish omelette and toast, soon after we jumped into our vehicles and headed out onto the beach for some driving. We came across a boat that got swept up onto the beach years ago and was slowly degrading due to it being battered by the sea. We also stopped off at a fresh water river that ran down into the sea. During the trip we stopped off at a lot of fresh water rivers and lakes, this is because you're not allowed to swim in the seas around Fraser Island due to the extremely strong currents and amount of dangerous sharks in the water. We were glad we got told this before we got to Fraser as we probably would have gone swimming otherwise. After a quick dip we headed further along the beach to a place called Champagne Pools, if you get to this place at the right time it could be amazing. It's basically big rock pools that hold water but if the tide is at the right height the water pours over into the pools and bubbles occur, hence the place being Champagne Pools. Unfortunately we caught it at the worst time, it was raining and at low tide so it wasn't amazing but still nice. After that the weather got pretty bad so we headed back to camp and started making our dinner which was chicken stir fry, and once again Bradders pulled out his chef skills that both Ross's never knew he had and came up with a quality meal for our group. After eating, around 20 of us went down the beach and just chilled out for a few hours and had a laugh.
The next day we got up early and had breaky which wasn't so inspiring, cornflakes and toast, but it did the job. We soon packed up all our gear and put back in our 4x4s, once this was done we headed to our last spot of the trip called Lake Wabby. It involved us walking for around 40mins through rainforest hills, when we got there it turned out to be a massive sand duned hill and at the bottom there was a little lake with fish cruising around. We decided to have some fun and sprinted down this pretty steep hill and jumped straight into this lake. We've got some videos that are hilarious. After an hour of swimming and relaxing around this lake we walked back to our vans, jumped in and headed back to Rainbow beach where we would unfortunately finish our tour. After cleaning out half of the sahara desert out our vans we headed back to our hostel and just watched a movie and then slept, we were so tired. The following day we were once again moving further down south to another location J
