I went to Iceland as a test for our world tour. We were testing our suitcases, our camera, packing cubes and our education routine.
I saw the:
1. Mid Atlantic ridge
2. Geysers!
3. Blue lagoon!
4. Volcanoes!
5. A lot of lava fields!
6. Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights
7. Horses
Mid Atlantic Ridge
The mid Atlantic ridge is very wide in some places. In other places it is not so wide for example when I was at Iceland one foot was on the plate for America and the other foot was on the plate for Europe. The kind of plates I am talking about are tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are the crust of the world. The world is like a pizza that has been cut up and moves. It is not solid and the pieces move around.
Geysers
At the Skokkur geyser it was actually cold. I would think it would be hot since the geyser is hot! Did you know:
There are only 700 geysers in the world!
Here is another fact:
Rain that travels from the clouds down through the rock and out through a geyser eruption can take 500 years!
Here are some questions for you:
1. How long is the mid Atlantic ridge?
2. How high can a geyser go?
3. How long can a volcano erupt for?
Answers
1. 10,000 km!
2. 30-300 feet!
3. It can be just for a day but one time one volcano erupted for 20 years!
Blue lagoon
The blue lagoon is a hot spring pool. It's hot but not too hot. I could swim in it and there was this white stuff all around the Blue Lagoon and I kept on wondering what it was but I never found out.
Volcanoes and Lava Fields
The volcanoes to me looked like mountains but they really were volcanoes. I believe that they looked like mountains because when the volcanoes erupted all the rock covered on top of the hole after and made it shaped like a mountain. Another clue how I knew that they were volcanoes was there were lava fields all around them. Lava fields are not smooth. They are lots of hard black rocks that were left from when the red hot magma came out from the middle of the earth when the volcano erupted.
I think that the lava fields looked like a big chocolate cake that had big chunky sprinkles and powdered sugar on top (there was snow).
Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights
The aurora borealis is dust from the sun that mainly shows up at night in the sky. Usually it is green but it can be red or maybe even other colors but I only see a lot of green and a little red. The northern lights doesn't happen so often so I recommend when you see them to really remember them. At first I didn't think it was so cool but my Mom told me how it was once in a lifetime and I should pay attention so then I really felt how important it was that I got to see it.
Horses
I found out the WEIRDEST thing when I was in Iceland that is….
THEY EAT HORSES! When I went to a museum in Iceland about the Vikings there was this old pub and there was a big long table with benches. On the benches there was horse skin. They even kept the tail and mane on!!! I was surprised.
