We were on the bus from Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay at 7am and arrived in Byron at 11.30am. We were previously warned that there was no point in going to Byron unless you had accomodation booked as it was peak holiday season and everywhere was fully booked. But we thought we would risk it anyways as the worst that could happen would be that we couldnt find anywhere and would have to rent a car and sleep in that for the night. We trawled around town for an hour and had no such luck finding a place to stay but luckily the last place we tried had room so we booked in there for 4 nights. So we checked in and headed straight for the beach as the weather was now amazing and how we expected aussie weather to be! We also bought a body board to play with as it was cheaper than renting one. After we had been at the beach we booked a surf lesson for the following morning with the cheyne horan surf school. So we had am early night so we could be fresh to hit the waves the next day.
We had our surf lesson at 9am, we got picked up and headed to Lennox Head but the tide was in and the surf was too big so we headed around the cove to Flatrock beach instead. We had a basic lesoon on the beach before we got in the water on how to position yourself, when to paddle etc. Then we jumped in the water and we allowed to get on with it. Both of us stood up on our first wave and were chuffed that we did as everyone else in the group was poop! We had 2 hours in the water where we both rode numerous waves and recieved lots of high fives from the instructors. Half way through the session 1 of the instructors took me out back to catch some bigger waves which was pretty cool as i was the only 1 he took. After the school we headed back to Byron and chilled on the beach for the rest of the day as we were so tired from surfing, it really does tire you.
The next day i rented a surf board as i had the bug and we spent the whole next 2 days at the beach playing in the waves and sunbathing in the beautiful weather...its a hard life! We also bumped into 1 of our friends from uni Andy Leat but he was heading out of Byron that day so we only managed a brief chat but it was still good to see a familiar face on the other side of the globe. We enjoyed our 4 nights in Byron as its a beautiful place with a cool hip feel to it, off to Surfers Paradise for our next stop.
