We flew from the tiny airport at Boracay to the tinier airport at Coron and took a minibus into town.
Coron is famous for it's wreck diving (there's really nothing else there). During World War 2 a huge fleet of American bombers flew over and destroyed 12 Japanese warships which are now a big attraction for divers. We found a very basic place to stay and then headed to a dive shop we had read good reviews on. Some of the dive centres had some awful reviews so we were willing to pay the extra and go to a good one. We organised our dives for the following day and spent the afternoon hiding from the sweltering heat.
After breakfast the following day we headed to the dive shop, got our kit and headed to the boat. It took nearly two hours to get to the first dive site, the Akitsushima Wreck. We descended and entered the back of the boat where it had been split open, we swam around a little and then swam back out. The visibility wasn't great but we did see a huge puffer fish.
The second wreck was the Okikawa. This one was a huge oil tanker, when the Americans blew it up it sat burning on the surface for two weeks before they came back and finished it off. The current here was so strong, as soon as you jumped in you were swept away! You couldn't really get an idea of the size of the wreck as the visibility was poor but there were corals growing all over it. Our dive master swam straight down through an opening and inside the huge tank that would of held the oil. Surprisingly he didn't switch his light on but signalled us in, it was very claustrophobic and dark, there was a little light coming through an opening at the other end but you couldn't tell where the roof was which was very weird, probably not the safest dive!
Our last dive was along the reef which was a nice change as we both found the wrecks a bit claustrophobic. We saw a few cool fish and then a turtle swam up in front of us. It was amazing and Pete's first turtle.
We were shattered by the time we got back to dry land. We had a nice dinner and a beer and an early night as we were off on the boat to San Jose early in the morning.
