To say we could see the spectacular volcano ridden Camiguin island from Bohol the boat took a surprisingly long time, after 5 hours we arrived and checked out a few hotels. We managed to find a basic one and our room was next to the black sand beach with the Bangka boats lined up on the shore.
Camiguin is a small island and everything is spread out around the many volcanos, so we hired a bike to explore. Our first stop was the sunken cemetery which was washed in to the see by a volcano, a cross now stands 50 metres from the shore to show where the church would be. The graves are now covered in coral so you couldn't see much. We then walked up Hibok Hibok volcano, which last erupted in 1951. On the path up there are huge concrete sculptures showing the stations of the cross. It was a rather sweaty climb so our next stop was the cold springs.
We spent ages searching for them but after driving up every road in the area we gave up, nothing is sign posted here. We headed back to the hotel for a San Miguel on the beach and Kate tried out her hair dressing skills on Pete's mop, she did a great job using the only resources to hand - paper scissors. We overheard someone at the hotel talking about a restaurant nearby so that night we found it and had a great meal, Kate had the Filipino favourite of chicken adobo and Pete had a pancake stuffed with chicken and cheese.
We were desperate to find somewhere that served our favourite breakfast of muesli with fruit and yoghurt and after the disappointing one at our hotel the previous day we found a place that did a much better job. We then drove to the otherside of the island and jumped on a boat to Mantigue island, we hopped off the tiny Bangka onto the soft White sand. This island is tiny, it has a beautiful beach and a small restaurant in the middle, one side is a marine reserve so we paid the fee (the Philippines must of been the founder of creating hidden charges as they're bloody good at it) and grabbed our snorkels. We swam out over the sea grass up to the coral where it suddenly dropped off to form a huge coral wall. We saw some huge bat fish, lots of little anemone fish, wrasse, a trumpet fish and plenty of other things. After a few hours we headed back, continuing our drive around the island to our hotel. We went to our favourite little restaurant for dinner and got an early night as we had a boat to catch in the morning.
