We took a small boat from Lombok to Gili Air with the locals, it was packed and resembled the fruit and veg isle at Tesco's, luckily it only took half hour.
None of the Gili Isles have any motorised transport, only horse and cart or bicycle. This was one of the smaller islands so we walked round to the east side and found a small hut for a good price, it was basic but we new after here we would start to splash out on some nicer accommodation so we had that to look forward to.
Gili Air was a massive contrast to Lombok, just as laid back but rather touristy. On our first afternoon we took a long walk around the whole island which only took an hour. The views were beautiful, on one side you could see the volcano on Lombok, in another direction was the volcano on Bali and from the other coast you could see Gili Meno.
We spent a lot of time relaxing here. We were expecting big beautiful beaches so were a little surprised to find only one small section you could sun bathe on, we made the most of it and sat on loungers here each day ordering fruit shakes and sandwiches from the bars.
Surprisingly the little island was rather cheap, we still hadn't reached high season so it wasn't too busy and the food and beer prices hadn't been increased yet. This meant we could afford more of it which was great. Gili Air is known as the more chilled out island but one night there was a big party at one of the bars. We bumped in to an English couple we had met the night before and decided to check it out. It was absolutely packed with people dancing to the badly mixed music so we grabbed a table on the perimeter and had a few beers as well as the vodka the other couple had brought with them. By three in the morning we were all a little drunk, except Pete, he was really drunk. We headed home and woke up the next day with a thick head.
The rest of our time here was spent on the beach or in the sea snorkelling. We continued our UNO championship in the evenings and Kate's lead continued to grow. It looks like Pete will be buying that last meal.
