Kratie made for a good stop off point between Ban Lung and Phnom Penh, it is a small town that sits beside the Mekong river.
We arrived at midday and found a guesthouse, we then ventured out to have a look round. We walked through the market which was the same as all the others we have visited selling the same knock offs and then found somewhere to relax and have a drink. We had heard the sunsets here were meant to be amazing, unfortunately it was cloudy on our first day.
We got up early the next day and took a long tuk tuk ride up the river to get on a boat. This part of the Mekong is known as the home of a rare breed of dolphins. Not long after setting out on the boat we saw a couple. Unlike other dolphins these don't have a long nose, they just have a bulbous head. Unfortunately they don't jump out if the water which made it hard to get good photos but they do surface a lot.
We then headed back into town and bought some Krolan; Kratie is known for this food, it's sticky rice which is mixed with coconut milk and beans and stuffed inside a small bamboo stick. We kept hold of these and headed for the island Koh Tong which sits in the Mekong just across the water front. The boat only took a couple of minutes and dropped us on the edge of a huge beach, we walked up to find some bicycles to hire which were a little worse for wear but did the job. The island doesn't have any proper roads but has a path which leads around it, we found a stop off by the river to try our sticky rice. We ripped open the bamboo expecting something special but it was actually pretty plain, we managed to eat one stick each and chucked the last. We then continued our ride around the island, the scenery was beautiful, as we cycled away from the river we went through rice paddies and fields and up past an old temple. Everyone was shouting hello as we past them. We then reached the river on the other side of the island and cycled through the village here, again the families were shouting hello from their houses. We continued round the island back to the boat and back to the mainland.
That evening we sat out on the hotel balcony to watch the sunset, it was still a little cloudy but rather pretty, as the sun went down the sky glowed red, it was absolutely stunning. We then had some dinner and an early night ready for our early bus.
