We got up early and headed for our boat to Koh Rong. We set sail just after 8AM and when we left the harbour the water started getting choppy. We were on a fair sized boat but it was bouncing up and down and we both started to feel a bit sick. Pete resorted to laying on the floor as many others had and Kate laid on the seat, we both fell asleep and woke up just before arriving at the island feeling right as rain.
At the end of the pier were Coco bungalows where we had arranged to stay for our first night. We were told all bungalows on the island were booked up and we would only be able to stay one night then we would have to find a guest house. We checked in but our bungalow wasn't available so we headed to the beach. The beach was beautiful, there weren't too many people and the water was crystal clear. Later on we went back to get our keys, the bungalow looked nice from outside an was rather large. It had two beds and a small bathroom. When we went to bed we realised it wasn't as good on the inside, there were huge holes where all sorts of wildlife could get in; we were used to geckos in our rooms but there was a huge lizard on our roof, it was about a foot long. There was no mains electricity on the island so they have generators which only work in the evenings, therefore there's no hot water either. There isn't much other than a strip of hotels which have restaurants along the beach really, no roads or ATM's. we were looking forward to a few days of doing absolutely nothing.
Luckily for us our bungalow was free for another night so we didn't need to worry about finding somewhere to sleep that night. Demand for accommodation on the island was high and there were only a few guest houses so we booked one for the following night before the next ferry load of people arrived. And blimey it was a full ferry. We overheard people saying everywhere was full, no idea where they ended up sleeping! So with nothing to worry about our end we decided to head out and find another beach on the island. As we mentioned there where no roads so we took off on foot through the jungle. It was an interesting walk, at one point we had to walk through the water to get across, luckily it was only waist deep. After walking about half an hour we reached another beach, it was absolutely beautiful. Its white sands stretched at least a mile so we walked half way and set out our towels for the day. The water was probably the clearest water we have been in. We probably only saw about ten people all day, it was like being on a desert island, absolute heaven!!!
The next day we checked into the guesthouse. We found a nice little place with a shared bathroom, the French owner cooks baguettes and pizzas in the morning and they had decent coffee too. Later on we sat around waiting for the electricity to come on expecting this would switch on the water pump for the shower. It didn't. There wasn't any running water so it was back to the Indian ways of washing out of a cold bucket of water in the dark. This place was right on the beach so we ended up not having to where shoes/flip flops for a couple of days as everything was on the beach.
We spent most of our time on Koh Rong on the beach or in the sea. In the evenings we tried out as many of the restaurants and bars as we could and found a few places with really good food, especially the BBQ at Cocos. We are really glad we went, we wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for a recommendation from Kate's friend as the island isn't in our guide book.
After so long on the beaches we are both looking forward to getting back to the mainland and exploring the cities. We are just hoping the return journey isn't as choppy.
