Day two
We wanted heat - well, we got it! Woke at 7am to 33 degrees Celsius outside. In the words of Ice Cube and N.W.A , I hope today was going to be a good day. After conversations that were very much lost in translation, we discovered our luggage had in fact made it to Bangkok and reunification was sweet! First envelope from the Alan MacDonald inspired country by country care package was opened, containing currency, a flag and interesting facts! Scanning the departures board uncovered another in the line of the current journeys teething problems...our flight was cancelled! Conversations with the Vietjet staff were positive- we were booked on a flight to Saigon, where we would change to a domestic flight to Hanoi. Perfect, at least the tides were turning our way perhaps! Arriving at Saigon, we visited the Visa office who had no idea what was going on, and we had to apply and pay for another visa! At least we were in! Hanoi appeared, glowing like National Lampoons Christmas tree. here we go, was the thought...we had made it. Bus to the hotel, drop off the bags, then out for local Vietnamese cuisine and local tipple. Sounded like a very well constructed plan...until we arrived at the hotel, where it was discovered that it had shut down! Through the help of the local Vietnamese, contact was made with their parent hotel who invited us to stay for free....result! There must be more motorbikes than people in Hanoi ( like the boda bodas in Uganda but on meth-amphetamine Andy Jones). One must be swift upon their feet to cross roads, otherwise you could easily stand on the kerb for extended periods waiting for a gap...there isn't any! Beef and chicken BBQ sat on tables and chairs that must of been borrowed from Santas workshop, but did that matter- absolutely not...how good was that food you ask? Well, I'll tell you, pretty f***ing good! You cooked your own on a hot plate, from ingredients pre seasoned, accompanied by the aptly named local ale, Hanoi. We had arrived......
