Rohin goes around the world
So what can I say after 5 days, 1300 miles, 4 huge nights and an average of 4 hours sleep.... Awesome! Its taken me 5 hours sleep back here at Audreys place to even get the energy to write this and Wes is still asleep on the couch complaining now and then about heart burn from his way to many vodka red bulls last night.
The purpose of the trip was to get up to Niagara Falls and then to the Frank Lloyd Wright building near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The rest would just be worked out as we went with the challenge to find happening bars on each night even if it was a Mon, Tue or Wed. So in short we took in Rochester, Niagara Falls, Toronto Canada, Pittsburgh, Falling Water and Harrisburg. We didn't really see too much during the days with us being in the car most of the time but we had no problem making up for that at nights.
So the trip started wit the Almo lady spending 5 mins trying to convince us that our standard Australian Sedan size car was small and that we would need something bigger. What for I don't know but eventually we hit the road and using our map quest directions we were out of New York and headed north. Going off a lead given in a map shop we were headed for Corning a rumored Uni town about 4 hours away. As we rolled in we soon realized that there was no Uni and nothing what so ever there. So after a quick beer and a bite to eat plan B took action and we hit the road and headed for Rochester a larger city on Lake Ontario about 1 hour away. We had nothing booked accommodation way for any night but a coupon book I picked up at a road stop had a few leads and soon had us staying in a 4 star joint right on the river in the center of town for $60 US. Not bad at all. So a shower and a change and out to try and find a happening bar. Ok so there wasn't much but it turned out the Wiggles were in town and this had a group of girl friends meeting up after a few moms took there kids to the show for a Girls Night out. They were on margaritas and after a few Yagger shots there was a dance floor created and some fun times had. Quote of the night came from a married mum with 2 kids who was very insistent that I kiss her. On refusal she said "Do you think id be asking if I was satisfied" OK so who am I to argue with that. No nothing thing happened but funny remembering that the next day.
So after a swim for a bit of a wake up we got going around 12 with stop no 1 for petrol and breakfast. So where else would we go but a road side dinner in the middle of Nowheresville. Not much on the menu for a Vegetarian but I gave the waitress a first when I asked for a burger with no meat. She was puzzled as to why I would want that and said she would try to explain it to Moe the chef out the back who she told us was from Iraq or something. As she walked off she said "Hey Jan, is Moe a towel head" at the top of her lungs with Wes and I pissing our selves laughing with whole dinner which continued as she gave Moe directions out the back for all to hear about my vegi burger. Very amusing Ill tell you.
Next stop, Niagara Falls the Canada side. I was a bit shocked to find that Niagara falls is completely built up all around with Casino's, Hotels and theme parks. Shame to take such a natural beauty and then build that around. It was amazing standing there and watching it but we weren't there for just the standard tourist photo. We did the Valley of the mist walk which gets your just meters from the base of the water fall where everything is pretty wet. Everybody's standing around with plastic ponchos on watching the water fall when I strip down to my Speedo's and don a swimming hat and goggles and start pulling poses whilst Wes takes pictures amongst the shocked and amused crowd. Very funny moment once again. Suppose people don't do that every day.
We decided to keep on driving and head for Toronto in Canada a large city that is pretty similar to Melbourne. Its got Trams and a very divers culture base. Problem was we could not find a Hostel room anywhere so ended up paying $140 Aussie to stay in a hotel but still we had a bed and were hopeful of another good night. We struggled to find anything though and ended up at a bar in Little Italy where there was a bit of a crowd. Still nothing happening at the bar and no descent tunes but we met a crew looking for the same thing as us and we all ended up at the only thing a happening that night, A Hip hop club just down the road. Not to many great events to talk of but a large night was had with lots of drinks and some bad Hip Hop dancing. We spent a few hours looking at Toronto and went up the tallest building in the world for the view and then it was back to the road and off to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
It was pretty drive there entering the city via a green valley arriving just on 8 with the sun setting behind us and giving a great view of this extremely pretty place. We were once again following our coupon book but those places were out of town so we decided to do some exploring to find something closer. We got a bit lost and tempers were on edge after the big day but we soon found a place in the South Side and were back out in pub for night number three. Same deal as always, not much going on as it was just a Wednesday but we met a few people and ended up in this dodgy place with the rest of the alcoholics called jacks bar. I can hardly remember the details of this night as I suggested a drinking game that I sucked at whilst we were having Vodka red bulls. All I know is I was within 1 sip of being extremely sick but managed to breath it out. Think I rang a few people at work, sorry about that guys and there was some hotel room wrestle for an unknown reason but come the morning we were both feeling rough and conversation was at a low.
We made our way down to the Frank Lloyd Wrights amazing building called Falling Water near Mill Runn. Its an amazing house built in 1930 that today would still be right up there with any modern design. The house is built over a waterfall with amazing engineering feets performed especially for those days. Wes and I were blown away and just could not believe how great the house was. It was for sure the highlight of our days on the trip.
But time was ticking so back on the road and in we rolled to Harrisburg another river side city for another night of fun. We had really struggled to find a dance floor or any descent music in the other towns but this place had a few night clubs and one of them had some tunes worth dancing too. The club was pretty crazy with the bar tenders dancing on the bar every 20mins, some fat Elvis wiggling on a podium all night and loving to have his camera taken, patrons dancing on the bar and a lot of whistles being blown. We started out on the spirits but knowing that we had to drive 3.5 hours to get the car back by 11:30 in New York I eased it up, but not Wes. He would have drunk about 12 Vodka red bulls and I'll tell you he was hammered. Wes and I were carving it up out there with the occasional sprinkler, motorbike and shopping trolley moves. We met some great chicks, shame we cant remember the name of the one Wes was dancing with but I spent a large portion of the night with a pretty hot chick called Lauren who was a bloody god dancer and a lot of fun to be around. I lost Wes at some stage and turned out he decided to move on and made for some more fun in another bar.
So with just over 1.5 hours sleep it was time to hit the road and get back here to New York. Wes however was a mess and slept through breakfast and ignored my first three attempts to get him out of bed. Eventually I got him in the car and we were off with Wes just putting the seat back and going back to sleep. Unfortunately the Adams satellite navigation system was not operating properly and I headed down the wrong motor way but got that fixed up and we arrived pretty much on time and safely back in the streets of New York.
So that's it. 5 days, hardly any plans and 4 nights in 4 different cities of crazy partying and lasting memories. We both really enjoyed getting out of the city and seeing some other parts of the US. I wasn't really fussed about coming here to tell you the truth but I'm really having a good time and hope some day to come back and see some more.
