Rohin goes around the world
Well the train ride was easy and the rest in Frankfurt was well needed in the end. You all thought I bit off too much with my event organising but I tell you im a light weight when put beside Jorg. This event that im here to help run is massive. Its calld the "World Class MTB challenge" It consists of 4 marathon races on the sat with a 27, 48, 77 and 100km course. Sunday is short coures race for pro's and Juniors around a 4km course in the forest just behind the town. Now that all doesn't sound too much but wait.
there are 68 trade companies coming. a DJ in the trade area for both days and live music in the main event arena for both days alos. Friday night is a pasta party for all Marathon entries, currently 1000 and still climbing and Sat night is post event party with a 10min fire works show and many live bands. Sundays race has 4 starts and this course is a see it to belive it sort of thing. There are 3 major drops called the north shore drop, world class drop and wolf drop. they arnt really drops but they are all very steep with very little run off and limited lines. they all have roots in them and each a tight corner to lead you in. The first one is at the bottom of the tightest switchback section ive ever riddden. Its DH style riding with 1 corner after another and the need to get each one just right. The crowd that will be in that seciton will be huge and in excess of 2000 they say. Its so big that the area will have its own DJ and commentator. can you imagine an aussies XC race with a DJ and commentator out in the course. Its going to be an experience.
I was not keen to ride the north shore and drops straight up and asked Jorg that we do some warm up single track for me to get back the feel. umm what ever happened to that.
My reqest to do some warm up single track fell on def ears though as we headed straight for what they call North Shore section. I was a mess. Had my weighting all wrong and was breaking too much on the front. I crashed heaps and by the time I got to the first big drop my confidance was shot so I walked down it. Im game but not stupid I knew I was riding badly.
We then headed up into the hills which was great. We did a 7km climb which took us to the top of the chosen hill, great view over the area. We then decended for ages down some fantastic single track. this stuff suited me really well and I stuck to Jorg like a fly to s***. he was going hard but I was right on him and wanted to pass. He is not confident at speed but very good at slow hard stuff. Once we go to the bottom we had a good 4km climb to get back over to the course where I jumped at the chance to do it all again. This time i rode it smooth but I stopped at the top of the first drop. I was just not sure.
I then went back and did it. Wow was it a rush. I was shaking all over at the bottom and felt great to have done it. Then we had to ride the second drop. Again I stoped just to look at it but again I went back and did it. They were by far the hadest things ive ridden and the section leading is was the tightest and steepest switchback section ive ever ridden. I look forward to getting it dialed and faster as well. as for the third drop called wolf drop. Well Jorg said even he doesnt ride it unless its race time as its just too dangerous. I agree but some how I know he plans on me doing it before I leave which has me a bit worried.
When im confident on the sections im going to tape my camera to the bike and video me riding down it. Its worth seeing just what this course is like. The rest of the course is 50/50 flowing single track and open trail.
The day are really full here. the event is in full swing and course set up is now in its second night. all the marathon course signage is out but the short course we are bunting at the moment. We have done about 2km in 2 nights as we have to do double bunt the whole way the terrain has been difficult to say the least. We work from 4ish to 9:30 when the lights run out and after that its beer and pizza on the hill where we look over France, Switzerland and Austria. What a view.
going on a 3.5 hour road ride tomorrow so im hoping we cross a boarder or two just for the hell of it.
Well ill get some pics up soon for you all of this area.
till then its off to bed for me as I think im cooking breakfast again at 7am tomorrow. yep im the cook, cleaner, labourer and may as well be the gimp too. its great. Im spending no money and getting to do lots. be good if I could understand what the hell they are talking about though.
Oh and Ryan, the Ghost Swag is great. I got about 5 shirts both dress and T's, Pants, shorts, vests, winter jacket, jumpers, socks, bike tools, helmet, addidas glasses and aparently there is more still to come. If I sent home everything in my back pack I still could not fit all this stuff. Brilliant.
