Rohin goes around the world
Austria day 2
So after day 2 on the Jorg training program im feeling somewhat wasted. After another full breakfast with the crew outside the house in the morning sun it was once again time to kit up for a ride. Jorg had assured me we were going to go a bit easier today as we had a climb that was 24km’s long and to some 2000 height meters. Plus we would do another big climb and the one to get back to the house. All up we were guessing it would be over 7hrs in the saddle. So we decended the hill and that would be pretty much the only part of the ride where we wouldn’t peddal. When we hit the flat Jorg had the pace on just as the day before. I didn’t feel to bad though so I stuck beside him right up to the start of the days big climb. The climb was tough rigth from the toll booth plus we had been gradually climbing for about 25km’s to get there. I stuck it out with Jorg for about 3 or so km’s but I decided to not go to hard and let him go. It was fantastic climb with switchback corners at some points ever 400 meters. The view back down the valley was also pretty awersome. The climb went to one lake just above where we saw the first snow and then kept on up for another 5km’s to a second large lake which was the top. We were at 2030 height meters but the actual top of the hill is some 3000 meters high and was covered in snow. Its accesable only via hiking and you have to cross one of the glaciers to get there. We decnded down the other side but we were going striaght into a head wind and had to pedal the whole way down. It was quite draining and a bit dissapointing to have climbed up so many great corners but now be decending down a fairly straight road and having to pedal the whole way. We decended for about 50km’s with a food stop along the way before we turned and headed up the next valley. I had assuem that since we were into a head wind that the next valley would give us a tale wind, but it was not to be. We were once again faced with a strong head wind but this time we were climbing also. Jorg powered into it for about 20 or so km’s before we hit the real climb. He was so strong. I kept trying to come up beside him but I could not last there. The wind was to strong and the pace was so high I just had to drop back behind. I was once again amazed at Jorgs strenght. After some 4hrs of riding he was pushing that hard, it was great to see. The climb was a good 10km’s long to the top and quite steep. I was on his wheel most of the way but with 2km’s to go I found myself beside him and then suddenly riding away in front. He had blown completely and was struggeling. I waited for him to drink some of his coke and get back up to my wheel and for the rest of the climb it was a bit of a revers of the day before. This time I was yelling encouragment and he was hanging onto my wheel. I must say I felt pretty good but its no wonder since I had rested the whole way in his draft as he worked so hard. We went over the top and decened down into another head wind and made our way back home. It was some 60 km’s home including that final climb to the house. All up we did 6:50 hrs and 3800 height meters. It was for sure my hardest day on the bike and that’s just how I feel now. I was dizzy for a bit and felt a bit vauge over dinner but with some good grub into me and water im ready for a good nights sleep. Dinner was at a local resturant just down the hill and it was very nice. They had some good vegi options which was a great change from German optoins.
So tomorrow we are aparently doing 4hrs of flat and slow for recovery. Jorg is insistant that I must ride the 100km’s this weekend and start with the pro’s. He rekons that I could go top 5 in the 100km race which once again is a bit flattering but im doubtful myself of such things. I have a crak at a good hard race but at the end of the day Im here to have fun and that’s what Ill be doing.
