Day 35, 36, 37 + 38
Yet another classy coach we headed to Butterworth, to catch a ferry over to Georgetown, Penang. Em slept most of the journey whilst I watched a Malaysian Kill Bill type film - was immensely cool, Emma hated it. We headed for Chinatown once arriving in Georgetown by taking the free shuttle bus. Shopping around, we managed to find an ac room for the next four nights. It was small but cheap and will certainly do us. Georgetown is a pretty sleepy city, so we decided to head out into the rural parts via bus. It was really hot that day but it didn't stop us from treking to see Kok Si temple, which held the world's largest Bronze Buddha statue. This was pretty impressive but not as an impressive as the free food I took advantage of that was being provided, Emma thought it looked rankety rank! We also went up Penang Hill but had to mission it back to make sure we made our booking time for the train up. It was a bit cramped inside the cart but worth it once we got to the top for the views (827m above sea level). On the way down, we barged in for good seats like everyone else and doing so I think we both kicked a couple of children - whoops!
The next day, we managed to finally send home our Christmas pressies for the family since buying them in India, so good to lighten the load.
The same day we took the U101 and headed for Penang's National Park. We were advised by a guy on the bus to head for Kerachut beach in the park and took his advice but not before doing a classic canopy walkway. Our first attempt to head for the beach we got lost but eventually found the right path. The walk turned out to be one of the hardest and best things we've done so far. Walking through jungle and up and down hills, in seriously hot weather, we came to Kerachut beach (turtle beach, because of their nesting) 2 hours later. Spending a little time there we eventually headed back, treating ourselves to well deserved Large Tiger beer at the other end. We also had a result on the way back, as the bus stopped right outside the street food place - don't think our legs could have carried us out for dinner.
Our last day in Penang was spent sorting out visas and our mini bus to Thailand. We did however go to Fort Cornwallis, which was REALLY exciting!!! It was only a pound though. Internet was starting to really piss us off. Don't think we will ever getting these flaming pictures downloaded. Not from my camera anyway!
The morning of our last day, we got picked up from our hostel and headed for Thailand, but not before we drove around Georgetown for an hour picking up everyone else first! Met a guy called Tony, very talkative and enjoyed laughing at the same things as me.
Onto to the boarder!!!
