Day 75 Siem Reap - Phnom Penh
After a 2 bus pick-up, we were finally dropped off at our VIP (whatever) bus that would finally take us to Phnom Penh – not sure how the bus driver drove! Should have grabbed one of the baguettes and dairy lea that the locals try to sell you, as I might have less tempted to buy the disgusting lunch I later bought! Still not sure what it was. We were really pleased with our Guesthouse especially as it was only 3.60 a night.
We got a moto to the waterfront, and I had a really amazing Massaman curry, Rog surprisingly couldn’t eat anything, He’s really gone off his food-surprise!! Saw some guys doing street dancing, quite good actually.
Day 76
Our first visit of the day was to S21, an old security building used by the Khmer Rouge to hold and torture Cambodian people during their reign. The building was previously a school before the Khmer Rouge took over. It was quite devastating to see, and each room contained pictures of the horrific acts that used to take place here. There were a number of pictures of the people being tortured and killed which were quite disturbing.
After 3 hours here we got a Tuk- Tuk to the Independence Monument, and walked to the Royal palace. We ended up not going in as there was a massive queue, and I had to rent clothes to walk around in which I didn’t really want to do. Ended up back in our guesthouse watching Chelsea beat Sunderland 7-2. Rog was ecstatic.
Day 77
The driver we spoke to the night before picked us up from our guesthouse to take us to the Killing fields. This was very sad to see, and after a video at the beginning that unfortunately didn’t really represent the horror of the Crimes carried out by the Khmer Rouge, we were able to walk around the site. There were several mass graves in the field, were 9000 bodies have been found. It is such a small area and pretty hard to imagine how this amount of people were killed here. The most upsetting bit of all is the tree that the Khmer Rouge used to kill the babies with. This proved very emotional. The memorial does however pay tremendous respect to the Cambodians that lost their lives due to the Khmer Rouge regimen.
On the way back into town we booked our Ticket to Sihanoukville, which we think we paid slightly to much for, never mind. We also saw a trailer go pass us, which had about 12 pigs all piled on top of each other, and held down by a net. I assumed they were dead until I heard a squeal… Vegetarian!! Had a nice evening in a restaurant, where they were playing P.S I love you, brilliant!!
