This is the last day of Ramadan, so I decided to exploit the day and visit the southern end of the Kornaish at Khobar. The reason being, as it is the last day of Ramadan, nobody would be there and tonight is breaking the fast for the last time, so it will be crowded to the max.
I have been meaning to go there for some time as it is a much nicer seafront than Dammam. And with Tamimi Supermarket, and Jarir Bookshop across the road there are nice places to shelter from the heat. Also there are a host of restaurants to eat at.
All these happen to be closed due to Ramadan, but according to John, Bona Banana is worth a look. But then he did leave the country in a hurried manner a few days after. Eh John...I know you are reading this from your present desert location. There is always the Todd Riverfront if you feel a longing for Saudi. But I guess the call of the Causeway got you in the end. As it will one day gets us all.
Valhalla, or the Jarir Bookshop, is the Expat Mecca. This is no Borders, especially for variety, but it is big and there is some choice. Books generally avoid the Saudi Fun Police so you will get the original, DVDs however are a target. Any picture on the cover with a woman's arms or neck exposed is coloured in with a felt tipped pen. Yes there are people here paid to individually censor the covers and pictures. It happens with magazines as well.
Fitness DVDs are the funniest as the leotards are savagely censored and I wonder how much the DVD material is censored. I tend to agree, I really think Jane Fonda would look better in a Burka.
Tonight to celebrate the breaking of the fast (Expats have to hide to eat during the day) Adele, myself and a South African friend of hers are heading to 'The Orient' for Sushi. Apparently it is good and the atmosphere is authentic. The last Sushi Adele introduced me too was excellent, so I have my hopes up.
I shall report on the Sushi tomorrow. Perhaps I have eaten out enough now to give a restaurant review like the supermarket review. Let's see what happens.
