World Trip 2005-06
We have spent 7 days or so in KL saying at the legendary Wheelers hostel.
We caught the overnight bus from Penang expecting to sleep through the journey and arrive in the morning ready for the next day. But it didnt go as planned, we actually arrived at 4 in the morning in the middle of this massive city, not having a clue where to go. After hunting out our 'Lonely Planet' and getting a taxi we eventually arrived at Chinatown looking for cheap accomadation! Thats when we stumbled upon Wheelers, not to be put off by the massive rat that ran accross the hallway leading to the hostel we arrived in the reception looking to catch at least some sleep.
Unfortunately all the rooms were full so we had to try and sleep in the cafe area till morning. It wasnt so bad though as we got talking to the hostel staff that are so funny and crazy. one guy was talking passionately about football for like half an hour then went on to make the bold statement that c*** fighting is better than football!
That day we slept which meant our body clocks were all messed up and remained that way throughout the week! so our days started at 1.00 in the afternoon for the whole week, we still lived it up during our waking hours though. We have loved the big city vibe and its diverse offerings. The city is full of awesome bars, shops and amazing architecture. As our hostel was in the middle of Chinatown we really got a feel for the chinese culture in the city. However Brides and I are like pros now on local transport so we frequently jumped on the train to hit other areas of the city. Highlights include the awesome Suria KLCC Shopping complex which is situated under the world tallest building in the shape of the Petronas towers. They are a sight to behold, you could stand there for hours looking at them, they stand at 451 meters! Within the shopping mall was an awesome array of shops including a shop with the craziest relaxation chairs i have ever seen, they cost $2,000! but we were allowed to chill on them for two days running. Other day trips during the week included a visit to the Batu caves and the surrounding temples and a lesson in buddism!
The Batu Caves offered awesome views, once you climed up 241 steps. Monkeys were all over the place!
The buddist vibe is what we wer really looking forward to but in the end it turned out we were limited to how much we could participate. Initially we took ages to find the actual building, so we arrived to late to do anything. We eventually found a monk though, they take some tracking down those monks! anyway they said its too late to do an actuall course but we can sit in a monk class the following day. Which was pleasing as the course would have involved getting up a 5.30 in the morning for temple cleaning. The next we were there loving the buddism class and learning lots about the religion. There so chilled out those monks, very relaxed atmosphere.
Other highlights include a meal in the KL communications tower standing at 421 meters above the ground eating in a revolving restuarant! we ate awesome food while looking out over at the whole of the city. that was special! we have also seen the new Hong Kong movie at the largest cinema screen in Southeast Asia! large popcorn, coke and hot dogs all round.
Not a bad vibe even if it did start at 1.00 in the afternoon!
Next up we hitting the jungle before coming back to KL for a night or two.
