We started today with a complimentry buffet breakfast which was very nice. The sun was shining and the sky was blue but by the time we had finished breakfast it had become overcast. We headed into town just after 9am. Lots of the shops and galleries weren't open yet so we went to the park first and looked at the arches made of elk antlers. They are quite amazing. There must be a good supply of antlers around. It was quite cool out so it was nice to get inside. One gallery we went into was full of fabulous metal and clay sculptures. Outside there were some really big ones we could have photos with. There was Abe Lincoln and Albert Enstein sitting on benches. The Town Square is surrounded by a boardwalk with lots of shops, galleries and cafes. It is really nice and there is a wide range of things to buy. There is lots of cowboy and Indian influences. A lot of the stores have stuffed bears or elks in them. At least I got to see bears! After wandering around for a few hours we headed to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. This was recommended by Jane. I had googled it and found it used to be an old bank. The bar has silver dollars inlaid in it. The stools at the bar are saddles. It was very cool (even if it was a bit uncomfortable) to sit on the saddles and have a cocktail. You can also eat in there and the tables and chairs have been carved out of trees in keeping with the mountain feel. While drinking the cocktails we decided we would drive to Idaho that afternoon. First we needed lunch so we went to Billy's Giant Hamburgers. After being caught out with too much at the Mexican restaurant the night before, we just ordered one between us and had it cut in half. It was delicious and just the right amount. Back in the car, Rob typed Bear World into the GPS and found it would take a couple of hours to get there. Just out of Jackson was also very pretty scenery. There were lots of pine trees covering the mountains. It looked very alpine. We even saw an eagle's nest built up on a pole and an eagle was in it. We wound our way up and down some pretty steep mountains. Just over the Idaho border the scenery was the same but the further in we got, the flatter it became. There were acres and acres of farming land-just brown fields as far as we could see. They might have been growing wheat. Some fields were being ploughed and there were lots of the huge irrigation things in use. We got to Bear World about 3.45pm. You do the drive through first. The first section was goats and elks. We saw a rare white elk and a really cute baby one-looked just like Bambi! Before going into the bear area we were stopped by a staff member who told us we had to keep the car moving at all times and keep the windows up. The first bear we saw was a grizzly-just the ones I wanted to see. But, it was lying down asleep so we couldn't see much. It is also really hard to take photos while moving so we might have stopped from time to time. It was warmer there than Jackson and the sun was out. A lot of the bears were taking cover in covered pits which was a shame. After finishing the bear section we went to the main building to see baby bears. We knew you could feed the bear cubs so we asked a man about it. We could have booked into the 5pm session but he told us you just get to hold the bottle and if the bear is distracted enough you can pat it's head. If we could hold the bears we would have done it but we decided to head back to Jackson. It seemed quicker getting back but I stuffed up once and turned onto the wrong side of the road. Thankfully the oncoming traffic was far enough away for me to pull into the breakdown lane. As we were coming down the last mountain the car shuddered really badly every time I braked. It felt pretty awful. The car also struggled to change gear when speeds were higher. Rob phoned the car hire place when we got back to see if we could change cars but they didn't have any available nor was the staff member particularly interested. She told Rob to ring the roadside assistance number to see if they could say when a car might be available at another location. He wasn't much help either so we will stop by the airport early in the morning to see if there is a car in. It has been fine around town but we don't know what mountains may be ahead. We had planned to have dinner at the Snake River Grill on another of Jane's recommendations. When we got there it was closed for a private function for that night only. So we went to Genevieve's Cafe which we had seen earlier in the day and had a lovely meal. I finally got to taste huckleberrys after seeing them throughout the morning in jams, coffee, sweets and honeys. They are red and smaller than a blueberry but taste great in a pie! Tomorrow we head for Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. It will be an early start as we go through the parks to the town of Cody.
