Today was fine all day!!!!! But, it was still windy and cold.
After a very substantial breakfast provided by the 'innkeeper', we left to explore more of Toledo. We drove around the streets in the immediate vacinity first, looking at the houses. The man in the hotel told us there were over 200 homes that were over 100yrs old. They are lovely old mansions but most need some serious restoration work. There were several that were just abandoned. It was sad to see.
This whole town needs some TLC and a whole lot of money to fix it up.
Our next stop was the Glass Pavilion which is opposite the Art Museum and is made completely from glass. Considering Toledo's history with glass, we expected to read about it and learn about the glass making process. But this wasn't the case. We looked at the exhibits but spent the most time watching a glass making class. We had to watch from outside through the glass windows and on the monitors but it was still very interesting.
Libbey Glass has been producing glassware in Toledo since 1888. Toledo was chosen because of the quality white sand.
We decided not to go across to the Art Museum as neither of us was particularly interested.
We had googled a few things of interest and decided to go to the Farmers Market, the Erie St markets and the Libbey Glass outlet store. We knew we couldn't take any glasswear home but looked anyway. It was exceptionally cheap and the most people we had seen all day were here.
The markets were a complete disappointment.
Next we drove out to a suburb called Waterville. There was a garden sculpture place I had seen advertised here. It was a very nice shop called Garden Smiles and the little village was cute. There were signs everywhere saying Historic Waterville but nothing to tell us why. I bought a tiny garden statue. The sculptures were really nice but really heavy.
We had no idea what to do next. Toledo is one of the most boring places to visit. All the local attractions left were sports stadiums and parks. Parks are nice but not when there is an icy cold wind blowing.
We had our iPads with us so we decided to go to a library where there was free WiFi to see if we could find more stuff to do. The first library the GPS found was no longer a library but the second one was a beautiful art deco building in the city. It was a massive library and there were lots of people there. We couldn't get internet connection so spent the next 90mins or so reading our ebooks. Unfortunately the library closed at 5.30pm so we had to leave. We drove around another part of town we hadn't seen before but it was just as rundown as other suburbs. We ended up back at The Docks for dinner. We sat in the car until 6pm and then went into an Italian restaurant. It was really early but we hadn't eaten since breakfast so it was ok. There was a surprising number of people already in there.
Tomorrow we leave!!!!!!!!!! We head for Cleveland and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
