Day 29: Time to go back to Brisbane!
We sat on Buddy's back step having breakfast when Caroline spotted a dolphin near the shore. Sure enough it came up to the surface again as it swam by. Minutes later we spotted a group of dolphins a little further out and watched as they swam out of the river towards the sea. Not a bad way to start the last day of our holiday.
Onwards a short distance to Shark Bay for a final paddle. The sunny weather hadn't turned out for us so we didn't go for a swim. The beach was completely deserted until a procession of about a dozen 4x4s arrived and set off driving along the foreshore, not hoons but litter pickers for clean up Australia day.
Driving north, we pulled at the Macadamia Castle. A nut themed fake castle that houses a cafe, shop, crazy golf and petting zoo. We enjoyed a coffee in the slightly bizarre surroundings with suits of armour looking on. We also felt obliged to buy some hot macadamia's, after all this is the mecca to this humble nut.
Back on the Pacific Highway our next stop was lunch at Brunswick Heads. There was a market on in town so we had a mooch, grabbed some lunch and a new fruit bowl as a moving in present for ourselves. We didn't stop too long as we were heading back.
We crossed back into Queensland and found the hour we lost on our first day. It was lunchtime again but Caroline wouldn't let Gareth stop for a second lunch.
Arriving in Brisbane and after getting lost as usual we found our way to Paddington and our new home.
The journey is over. 6800kms driven, no major breakdowns for either Buddy or us. Would we do it again? Yes, but next time we'd take 2months!
