So in searching for the sun and Robbie Fowler, I was 50% successful!
Left Cairns at 7am an got on the bus. Well smart it was too! Leather seats, loads of leg room and air con. Result. Chose to use this company (Oz Experience) rather than greyhound, which is similar to National Express in that its takes you from A to B but is full of sleeping pensioners. Oz Experience is for the younger mob, and they also stop off to let you see places you wouldn't normally go.
Only been travelling for around 2 hours and we stopped off at pikeyville, I mean Innisfail, for breakfast. Just on the outskirts of town was JohnstoneRiverCrocodilePark. As I was saying, I wouldn't have come here normally but well glad I did! Pulled up and one of the croc workers (nutter but then you'd have to be!) came on the coach and put a baby croc on which scurried to the back. Certainly woke everyone p!
Had a hold on the bus, then as we went in we had the chance to hold loads of other reptiles and creatures. (Note mum when I get the chance to put pics up theres one of me holding a snake!)
We were then taken around the croc farm and shown some absolute beasts! Gregory was an absolute monster! Obviously as it's a croc farm they want babies so theres always a male and a female in the pen for some giggidy giggidy action. Was interesting watching the workers try and feed one whilst avoiding the other!
Santa got a feed too (he was caught from the wild after killing 40 cows on xmas day you see!) but was all alone - apparently he killed his last partner! Haha Clearly a whinging and nagging female gets to us all!!
Im planning on going to Australia Zoo in Brisbane (Steve Irwin's one) but the driver said he prefers here as your closer to the crocs - and he wasn't lying! They came to the door a few time. The keeper said (could be a lie of course) that a few months ago a croc ripped a wheel of a babys buggy! The baby stayed asleep apparently but the mum was in tatters!!
Then back on the bus and stop offs at MissionBeach and Townsville meant there was only a few of us catching the ferry over to MagneticIsland. Well 4 of us infact, me, Sharon, Caroline and er, Caroline. We just chilled out around the hostel as it was the evening and took advantage of happy hour.
Now I know what your thinking… Rob Overton is abroad and he hasn't been to see a football game yet! Well DON'T PANIC! Got myself a ticket to see North Queensland Fury (class) vs Brisbane Roar (double class) at, wait for it….. the Dairy Farmers Stadium! (triple class)
That was in the evening though and so had a full morning and afternoon on MagneticIsland before catching the ferry back to Townsville. The girls were staying another night and wanted to rent a car to drive around the island. Did I say car? I meant a god awful, really camp, barby style soft top heap of junk. We drove around the island and admittedly it was a right laugh. I drove the length of the island, south to north and can you believe it, as I parked Nelly up, all the girls moaned I drove too fast and they missed the scenery! Unbelievable. Especially as I swear Stephen Hawkins ripped past me when I was battling my way up the hill.
Anyway we parked up for a bit and finally I found the sun! I got burnt being a typical Brit abroad but oh well. The girls then dropped me off at the ferry terminal ready to re-instate my man points after the battering they took with the 'car'. Off to the game!
Got to the breathtaking stadium to find he legend Robbie Fowler not playing. He was fit apparently but had a row with the manager so he was dropped. Gutted. The first galf was a shocker, infact the only notable events was a suspected broken leg inside the first 2 mins and a drinks break halfway through the first half. First for me!
I sat behind the goal in the second half on the hill with a beer and the move paid off. Roar took the lead with a goalmouth scramble, and shortly after Fury equalised with a similarly pants goal. Lookes suspiciously like handball. Twice. Oh well! It finshed 1-1 thanks to Fury's goalkeeper - he must of heard as yet I haven't been to a game abroad and watched the team I wanted to win lose!
All in all the game was pretty dire, the tiny ground wasn't even full (only around 7,000 there!) and I didn't get to see Robbie Fowler ripple the net one last time. On the positive side though, im able to say ive been to the Dairy Farmers Stadium and also now own a green football scarf. Which any football fan will tell you, in antique terms, is an absolute gem! Winner!
Sorry but haven't got time to upload any pictures, my bus leaves for AirlieBeach soon where I shall be sailing around the Whitsunday islands for 3 days. Got a bit of time to chill after so hopefully ill put them up then.
Love Rob x (x x x)
