Having already spent a day and a night in India before we went to Nepal we knew what to expect. Constant hassle, whether about going into people's shops or getting tuk tuk's.
We landed in Delhi and decided we were going to book some train. But this was not as simple as you would think. We had heard of a tourist booking office but this eluded us at New Delhi station due to being told it was being redecorated, we were shown ladders and paint pots in a corner of the building by a man with an ID card and an official (or what looked like official) railway uniform. We were bundelled into a tuk tuk and taken to a 'temporary office' where we were told all the trains were either booked or not running due to dust and a train crash the previous day. We were then told the only option was to book what these men referred to as a 'railway car' at £500 for the week! Obviously we could not afford to pay this so we looked to bring our flight to Bangkok forward to the next day but there was no space. Eventually, we came to the realisation that this was a scam and got out of the office as quickly as we could. After a few hours of constant hassalling and hurtling around in tuk tuk;s (which fortunately only cost us 40 INr - about 50 pence) to various 'government tourist offices' we called it a day and decided we would try again the next morning.
The next morning we walked confidently into the train station ignoring all the 'Sirs' and 'Madams ' and got to the tourist booking office. Where it took us about 10 minutes to book all of our trains. Delhi-Pushkar, Pushkar - Jaipur, Jaipur - Agra and Agra - Delhi.
In Pushkar, we did a camel Safari where we spent the night under the stars in the desert and also for dinner got given bread patties cooked on a dried camel dung fire. The Taj Mahal was really beautiful but the same can not be said for the surrounding town of Agra!
Overall we are glad we experienced India, it makes everywhere else seem so much easier to travel in....but we definately won't be rushing back in a hurry!
Next stop...Thailand.
