On the way to Ko Phangan we made friends wirth an English girl and her Dutch man friend (Abi and Koen) and stayed at the most amazing and luxurious resort, away from the madness of Hat Rin - the stage for the infamous Full Moon Party. We savoured freshly caught snapper and amazingly cheap cocktails each night, and relaxed like gentlemen on the beach by day.
The night of the party started in an extremely civil manner, but soon descended into carnage! Upon docking into the harbour, we were greeted by 9000 people going wild on the beach, some already passed out on it but most just getting started. At this point we would like to come clean and admit that we don't actually remember getting off the boat, as Koen smuggled aboard a bottle of Cointreau. The beach basically consists of about 20 bars stretched out selling thousands upon thousands of buckets of Thai whiskey mixed with coke and industrial strength red bull, G&T's and beer. The music wasn't particularly amazing but seeing the fireshows, people caked in flourescent paint, and vibe more than made up for it. There was a nighclub built into the rocks which pulsated violently under the hundreds of people bouncing to the pounding pounding techno music (this will definitely be on the news one day when it collapses)!
We got split up from our new friends and each other several times, spending most of the night wandering up and down the beach. Robbo went to an italian restaurant alone and witnessed a balding homosexual wearing nothing but tight leather pants, dancing with a pole in a manner that can only be decribed as provactively. Meanwhile JF got wedged in some rocks by the sea and had to be rescued by four Aussies. It's difficult to sum up our experiences of the full moon party as we can't actually remember much else. But you should definitely go! Although be warned, getting the boat back under the tropical sun at 7am is not a pleasant experience.
On Rob's birthday JF was a terrible friend and failed to buy a gift (no more romantic meals) - and I still havn't had anything so he's really in my bad books now.
