In the late 1890s the pastoralists and shearers around Barcaldine and beyond, were in dispute over wages and the shearers mobbed together in what is regarded as the birth of the labour party in Australia. The shearers gathered at what become known as the Tree of Knowledge in the mainstreet of Barcaldine. A few years ago it died, supposedly poisoned by dastardly conservatives.
