Longreach and nearby Winton both claim to be the birthplace of QANTAS but Longreach has the 747 parked in its proverbial driveway and also the hangar used by QANTAS in the 1930s. As this photo shows, our kids were so taken with the signficance of it all that they developed a great game around rolling tenno balls down the old drainpipe hanging off the side of the heritage listed aeroplane hangar......

In the late 1890s the pastoralists and shearers around Barcaldine and beyond, were in dispute over wages and the shearers mobbed together in what is regarded as the birth of the labour party in Australia. The shearers gathered at what become known as the Tree of Knowledge in the mainstreet of Barcaldine. A few years ago it died, supposedly poisoned by dastardly conservatives. As this piccy shows, we went searching for knowledge at the Tree.....

As we've travelled we've snapped a few of the legendary "Bigs" including the close-to-home Big Merino (which has managed to cross to the other side of the road in Goulburn despite having all it's legs concreted together), Big Banana, Big Pineapple and Big Prawn.
