Road to California
Hi Everyone,
This will be our last entry from Amsterdam. We are having so much fun!
Two days ago, we went to the Kroller-Mueller Museum in central Holland. The journey took us 2 hours by rail and bus to get there. The museum had a large collection of Van Gogh paintings as well as a number of sculptures both indoor and outdoor. After seeing the museum inside, we took a walk through the sculpture garden (~30 acres). They had a number of large and interesting pieces scattered throughout the woods.
Later, we borrowed a couple bikes and rode for 10-15 miles through the national park which surrounds the museum. The end of the day trip was the most interesting part, we missed the last bus out of the park and had to hitch-hike (with a very nice German family) to another bus stop... Long story short, after 3 hours, 2 buses and 2 trains, we made it back to Amsterdam via Arnheim, Appeldorn and Amsvoort.
Today, we went to visit Alkmaar, the home of a traditional Dutch Cheese Market. A bit hard to explain, but essentially, the cheese wheels are brought in via truck and laid out across a square. Then, "runners" carry the cheese on wooden pallets to be weighed and sold. The town was quite charming itself with a number of 17th century mansions along a wide canal.
After the market, we went to tour 3 windmills and learned how the Dutch used the mills to reclaim 1/3 of the landmass that is Holland. Then, we went to Edam and toured a cheese farm, where we saw how they make Gouda ("Gowda") cheese. We were able to sample and purchase some tasty Sheep's cheese (yummy!).
We cannot easily upload photos in Holland, so we will be putting up a ton of pictures once we get to Athens on Tuesday. Get ready, I've taken over 400 pictures so far.
Take care,
Anthony & Angela
