Another big adventure today.
We gathered with 50 other intrepid explorers for a bus trip to Glendalough and Kilkenny, with a very special treat in the middle at Wicklow.
Glendalough is about an hours drive from Dublin and the sight of a monastic city founded by St Kevin in the 6th century. Mostly ruins there now though one intact building - the Priest's house. Plenty of early grave stones to check out if there was time and being a tour there wasn't particularly if you wanted to walk to the lake and get shots with the snow-capped mountains in the background. Which is what we did.
When we first joined the tour we were told about the snow but also told that we may not be able to take our usual route through the mountains because of the snow. But, we were and so it was with a lot of joy and anticipation that we headed into the mountains. It was beautiful and the higher we went the heavier the snow fall.
We eventually stopped at a clearing further up the Wicklow mountains where apparently you can see Dublin and take lovely shots of the view. We piled out and played - Nick started it off by throwing snowballs and then we were all in. One lady commented if we've never seen snow before, and when we replied no, was most surprised. 'Don't they have snow in Australia?' 'Not in Queensland!'
It was cold but not that cold. And it was wet but not that wet. And it crunched under your feet - that's my footsteps in the photo.
Back into the bus (because we were starting to feel cool, and on to Kilkenny. Kilkenny has as its centre a medieval village complete with wall, castle and numerous other really old buildings. We had lunch there and then had about an hour to wander around seeing all these sites. Lots of wandering up and down the streets and hills.
An hour and a half bus ride and we were back into Dublin.
Our plan for the night was to see an Irish music and dance show and that is what we did. It was very good. Four musicians playing and singing a wide variety of Irish songs, plenty of audience participation. The dancers were brilliant with legs flying everywhere at what seemed like the speed of sound. What better way to end our trip to Ireland than with that.
