We pulled off the road shortly after setting out this morning, as I decided we should go see the Lewis and Clark Caverns (lots of images on google) having seen it on our way out to BC and thinking that it looked interesting. It was only 7 miles off the highway to the campground, which was absolutely beautiful. It is at the base of the hills, set back from a sparkly quick flowing river, and has lush green grass throughout in nice contrast to the golden bronzes of the Montana groundcover. We got directions and took another very short drive up the mountain. It was 25 dollars for our family and so we decided to take the two mile, two hour guided tour through the caverns, made all the more amazing as all i had on were my silver flip flops. This was an amazing tour and great value and so interesting...I highly recommend it if you are ever out this way. We may come out here to rent one of their cabins next summer (you can tent as well), and do some of their many hiking trails. Robyn, i got you a badge at the gift shop - you would love this place. The limestone caverns are truly amazing and we had to crouch down low to get through some parts, slid down a short and shallow rock slide, clung to hand rails, navigated the wet at times limestone stairs, and hoped to not hit our heads (which I did twice)! I wish we could do it again, and I am sure we will next summer. Poor James had to carry poor little Cooper throughout the cavern tour, as he was sick all last night and again today. Even harder though was carrying him up the path, which has a 300 foot rise in elevation, leading to the cavern entrance. We were the last ones to arrive, but we did it in 25 minutes and they actually give you 30 minutes to get there :). It was a definite highlight of our trip and along with the caverns, the great hotel, and continued amazing scenery, Montana remains our favorite state. As we headed back to the highway, we passed a few new log homes being built, and I made turkey and chicken salad sandwiches for lunch made even nicer with the addition of bottled water and ice creams all around picked up at a quick stop to a nearby gas station. Boo hiss to the jerks in the white car going down the highway at 125km's an hour with the young child on their lap in the front seat!! We have decided to drive three more hours today only, as James is quite tired and hasn't perked up as he usually does following a five hour energy shot. He is also slightly depressed about our new cracked windshield - curses at flying stones. I choose to look on the bright side of things, like how soft my face is today, a lovely side effect of being so tired last night that I rubbed olive oil based conditioner all over my face instead of lotion. I finally realized something suspicious was up, but was far too tired to care after staying up to ridiculous hours doing laundry and taking care of Cooper. Besides, I think it is genetic as I remember my mother visiting once and yelling out in the shower, as she had accidentally washed her hair with our peach bubble bath and had a headful of bubbles :). Just called ahead and made reservations at the Best Western War Bonnet Inn in Miles City, only because apparently we have just about enough points on our best western card to get a free hotel room one night. This will help, believe it or not, especially as we are now a thousand dollars over budget :(. Went to a tiny restaurant across the highway armed with some coupons from the hotel clerk for supper. The restaurant is called "The Boardwalk" and it looks like a heap of junk backwoods hairy food kind of place, but upon reluctantly pushing open the door we discovered it was packed with locals. So friendly and fast and they make their own burgers and cut their own steaks. Amazing burgers all around with awesome service and free drinks and ice cream. A great surprise. An early night for us all tonight, especially Cooper who has had another rough day.
