Richie's Travels!
Hello Peeps!
Well as you well know we made to Jaipur!! Caught the train from Old Delhi Railway Station at 5:10AM and chuntered along to arrive some 6 hours later. The journey was alot of fun, 6 to a compartment (well an opening without doors), with fold down beds triple bunk style hanging from the walls. I got meself a pillow and blanket, grabbed the top bunk and proceeded to read 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest' as the sun was beginning to put in an appearance. Woke 2 hours later to find book stuck to face covered in drool.
Took Tuk Tuk to our hostel and hired another for a couple days complete with driver 'Moona' to show us the sights and backstreets and jewellery shops and fabric shops and jewellery shops, ENOUGH!! He was a top bloke, looked uncannily like the Omar Sharif of 20 years ago, really really was a dead ringer. Never got his picture, but did get a made to measure shirt from the fabric shop though!
Did the forts, palaces, ruins, towers, memorials and got to take a photo of the 'THE LARGEST CANON IN THE WORLD' at Amber Fort. Apparantly it had only been fired once in testing, and it was so loud that all involved were defeaned. The Fort never actually came under attack and I can see the reason why. Why anybody would want to yomp up a severely steep hillside 1000's of feet in the air to overun the inhabitants for a coffee shop and a coke machine would begger belief. The canon was nice and shiney though and the mineral water ice cold which was nice!
The people of Jaipur were lovely, the postcard/snowscene sellers actually left you alone when you said no. This took some getting used I can tell thee, so we took the time to chill out and recharge before our air conned bus journey back to cows, pigs, dogs, car horns, dirt....... I mean Delhi.
