Exploring the known and unknown
Michael's factory
Dutch ID
"Dutch ID" is a brand of bicycle which was a Dutch Idea to begin with. As mentioned before, I used to work for/with Michael in Holland when I lived there for a few years between 2000 and 2006. The Dutch factory produced Recumbent bikes (for those who don't know what they are, I have placed a pic I found on the internet). I think it was somewhere in the 2004-2005 period that things were moved to Taiwan. Meanwhile, Optima, the Recumbent manufacturer, merged their manufacturing and sales area with another company called Amazing Wheels. From that time on we/they became a major supplier to the bicycle retail industry in the Netherlands. One of the fastest growing market segments was, and still is, the electrically assisted bikes.
Steadily new models were developed ranging from commuter to sports bikes and even cargo trikes which are very popular in Holland (the cargo being children). Now, nearly all items are produced in Michael’s factory in Taiwan and sent in parts to Holland for final assembly. In separate factory nearby, another bike called "First Bike" is produced.
This bike is aimed at the children market. Michael recently sold the sales and marketing arm of the company and concentrates solely on the production and development of existing and new models.
The brand new 7000m2 assembly plant is situated in Beverwijk in the Netherlands which will be opened at the end of May.
Thirty people are employed in Taiwan and another thirty in Holland.
If you live in Holland and you see Optima or Urban Arrow bikes or a a Dutch ID bike or Cargo trike with a Bosch electrically assisted motor attached, you will know where it came from.

Rob Great! I have witnessed Richard working with optima in a very small factory back then. Impressive to see what he and his team have accomplished! Too bad i live too far away nowadays, would have liked to work there and make a fresh new start. Good luck!
