Exploring the known and unknown
Day 119
16 Aug 2013
On the back of a bicycle
Last night we arrived back in Ab's home town of Brielle where his wife Ineke was waiting with another of her excellent dinners. Today it was time to go and what followed was a very amusing morning; but first lets go back a few steps.
Many years ago a website was launched called Schoolbank.nl (I mentioned this earlier) A subscriber to this site would will be able to find his or her’s schools listed on this site , ranging from Pre-school to University and anything in between.
Over the years, many old friends have found this site resulting in the laying of various old/ new contacts and finding old schoolmates. I wrote earlier about my old schoolmate Ted Wesselius on July 4.
About ten years ago when the website had been launched I found a girl I knew by the name of Elian Nieuwland. I visited her and her husband in the town of Zoetermeer where they ran a party shop and post office at that time. Elian and I kept in touch once or twice a year via face book. When visiting Ted Wesselius, Elian’s name came up. Ted told the story that one day He and a friend were riding their bicycles and saw Elian and another girl who then asked them a lift on the back of their bikes. Ted had hoped to get Elian on the back of his bike (as he liked her a lot) but missed out as she went on his mates bike and was left with a girl he didn't want.
At the age of ten this was a severe blow and I reckon this missed opportunity caused great grief (just kidding Ted)
Anyway… As Elian had been following my blog she knew that I was in the area and asked if I wanted to come over. I agreed and asked if it was ok to bring Ted- and of course it was.
The plan was that Ted and I would meet about 5minutes to ten in the morning in the village main street near Elian and her husband Gert’s premises and enter the shop together. Just before ten I received a text from Ted that he would be a bit later and asked me to go to the store by myself. I met Elian and Gert and promptly received another text from Ted asking us to meet him in the street outside the store.
We walked outside and saw Ted some distance away getting on a bicycle (which he had brought in his car) riding towards us. With a grin on his face he said: Never mind I explain everything later, but I want Elian to come with me right now and sit on the back of my bike. Then Ted pedaled away with Elian on the back. Gert and I just stood there laughing. After about 50 meters they turned back and Ted said: What I failed to achieve some 50 odd years ago I finally achieved today; to take Elian on the back of my bike.
Never a dull moment with Ted Wesselius. Needless to say we had a fantastic day.

Ted Wesselius Hi there .. where is the photo with Elian on the back seat of my bike (and me pedaling..) in Zoetermeer on August 16th AD 2013 ? Can somebody post that? I need convincing evidence please !!! Not because I will ever forget last Friday. But imagine.... the other class mate pops up somewhere soon. After all the second part of the drama of my childhood still has to be setttled. I want to try to get 'H' (my low priority lady; the less if not""un"-wanted passenger) on the back seat of F's bike. (F was my other class mate..) This seems just a matter of mutual justice to me ;-) Anyhow, friends.. it was great meetingall of you again !!!
