Our second week in Melbourne started with another visit to the city centre by train. We walked to the Melbourne Museum passing the Royal Exhibition Building en route. We met Sulari Nielsen and the two boys in the park and spent the day with them in the museum. We visited the Tutankamun exhibition and then caught up with Sulari and the boys in the children's section. After dinner Peter joined us and we looked at some of the Aborigine exhibits, more of the children's section, dinosaurs and wild animals. When we parted, we jumped on a few trams to visit the Old Melbourne Goal which housed some notorious criminals. After a quiet day on Tuesday, Sulari took us to Mornington on Wednesday. We walked, talked and shared lunch. On our way back we went via Peter and sulari's house and collected the boys from nursery. On Thursday we took a free bus tour on an extended route around the city, jumping on and off to visit some of the sights. On Friday Max was not at work and took us to a different section of Port Philip Bay from Ricketts Point to St Kilda. We had lunch at Brighton!!
Over the weekend eight of us set off for the Great Ocean Road. This included Philippa and Max, Philippa's two brothers, Alan and Richard, together with Lois and Glenys. We had breakfast at Geelong and short stops at Torquay and Lorne and further stops to take photos. We decided to view the 12 Apostles even though the weather was on the turn, windy and intermittent rain. We stayed overnight at the Boggy Creek pub. In the morning we viewed the Bay of Islands before breakfast and Loch Ard Gorge afterwards. The sky was blue, but it was still windy and the sea was quite wild. Maureen, however, decided that she had to have a paddle off the southern coast of Australia. The waves were not coming in far enough and beach was steeper than Lorne.. Oooops she went in a little too far and got wetter than intended!!! After the coast we went to the trees (Richard was a forester) and visited the Triplet Falls and Otway Fly, a treetop walk with tower and cantilever!! It was really high up and still very windy!! Our final port of call on the Great Ocean Road was the sequoia forest where we had billy tea and cake.
Monday and our final day in Australia. After doing some packing, we headed into the city for a walk to and round the Botanical Gardens and back along the River Yarra. It was really sunny and we had a lovely walk. Now we are off to Hong Kong for a two night stay.
