Living The Dream
I'm still alive!
The flight from Sucre to Santa Cruz was fairly good considering that we took off on an uphill runway from what was only just about qualifiable as an airport! The plane was fairly modern although it was quite turbulent on take-off and landing. The flight lasted 30 minutes. Basically as soon as we had taken off and cleared the mountains we began to decend! The landing was aweful - our approach must have been manual since the plane just swung around in a circle just above ground level! It took the pilot three attempts to land! We hit the floor and bounced up for about 3 seconds, then bounced up AGAIN until finally landing!
Landing in Santa Cruz reminded me of landing in Cuba last year - it is very hot and humid here and also very green!
I stayed at a hostel with Tucan's and hammocks! I wondered around the central part of the city and drank cocktails from a balcony overlooking the square. I noticed a local girl looking up at me with amor so I waved! She waved back and disappeared. About 30 minutes later she came past again and we exchanged more childish waves and smiles! I probably should have gone down to get her number but I was quite enjoying my Daiquiri!
Santa Cruz is a relitively rich part of Bolivia and most of the residence seem to want to be seperate from the rest of the country. According to a woman I spoke to, they are a little afraid that Evo will take their money and be communist with it!
The main reason for flying to Santa Cruz was so that I could launch my final Che related adventure into the Cordillera Oriental. My next destination is Vallegrande - the town where Che was buried in secret. I will return to Santa Cruz to collect my bag before heading further north towards La Paz.
